Custom Baling BS

It has always amazed me how people will try to tear up your equipment and laugh about it. I was round baling yesterday about 2:00. When it get to the last few fields the hay started to get really tough. It actually looked green considering that this was still first cutting hay. When I got done I commented that the hay was a little green.

"Aww, its not too bad. It will be fine. I just mowed it this morning."

Then he laughed.

To which I replied that it is all fun and games until I break a baler.

I need to find a way of getting out of this custom baling gig.

Vermeer 505I Super I will bale green. Have you ever noticed how much harder a baler pulls when you bale haylage? That is more stress on sprockets, chains and bearings. More stress means more wear and shorter life. My baler is 20 years old and averages about 750 bales a year. Still looks and runs like new. Most everyone else around here has had 2 or 3 balers in that time frame and bale half the hay I do. I have seen what some of the silage balers look like when they come back to the dealership.

ou are the man doing the baling.........you tell the customer when it is ready to bale.

I agree, your equipment, your call. I won't do a custom job unless I do the whole job. It's just too hard to make up for somebody else's poor job of mowing or raking.

I also agree, I take the 4 wheeler out and evaluate the hay before baling. I even had a customer take a walk on me once because I would not cut hay before an extended rain. Told me it was getting past it's prime and it had to be cut then and now. They had reserved the whole field too. I cut it a little past prime and discounted it a bit, sold it to someone else.

Sounds as if you need to invest in a hand held moisture tester & use it. I've been in the custom hay baling business since '87 & use my moisture tester every time I bale hay.

I have done custom baling for almost 30 years now. Spent the money on a moisture sensor on the baler. When it gets too tough QUIT!!! Baling hay that will not keep does no one any good. Plus the average customer will tell everyone how YOU baled it and leave out the fact he cut it just before you came to bale it.

As for your baler. I have ran high moisture kits in every baler I have had since they came out with the kit. Heavier pickups and drives. Just makes life easier.

Would be hard to make custom baling work with a new baler and doing 750 bales each year. The new balers are just too expensive anymore.

"It actually looked green..."

Why didn"t you get off the tractor and check it if you had any question?

I didn't have to get off the tractor. The tractor and baler both told me the hay was high in moisture.

Exactly right. That is why I try to take it easy on the baler I got. Don't think I could charge enough baling down here to pay for a new baler.

I would have checked the hay with a moisture tester as previouly suggested. If you do not have one, buy one.
Your second pay day is coming when he opens up the bales and tells anybody that will listen about damn fool that baled his hay as JDseller mentioned previously.
