Bad 5 hp compressor motor

I have 5 hp 1ph 80 gallon Quincy compressor that I have had for 3-4 years. Has not been used very hard. Last month it would not kick in. The breaker was okay and it would just hum. So I rolled it 1/2 turn and tried it again. A big crack and black smoke. I thought it was a capacitor. I think it was a Baldor. It turned out to be the field and I needed a new motor. The new motor is a Leeson and VERY expensive! I have had good luck with Baldor motors on my bins in the past?? This shop has always been very good in the past and I trust them.

Leeson is as good or better as baldor. I hold no respect for baldor as a name anymore, they are not the company they used to be.

I used to have Baldor motors on a lot of the stuff around here. Then about ten years ago the new ones seem to be mostly junk. Only last a few years at the most.

I have been putting US made GE motors on most of the grain equipment. Local shop gets them and they are about 40-50% higher in price but I have not replaced the first one yet. After TWO Baldor motors failed on the grain leg in one fall, I refuse to have any new Baldor motors on the place.

Good to know, I have always bought Baldor and thought they were the Cadillac of Electric Motors. Did have one 10hp three year old burn a field out about two years ago.
