Kawasaki 4010 oil filter?

I change the oil on my Kawasaki 4010 mule every 100 hours. The oil filter is a 49065-2071, which costs a $15 at dealer, a little cheaper on line. When I google the kaw number there are many hits, all aftermarket filters, some the hated fram filter. So, after watching on U tube where BUBBA cut the filters apart and pees on the Fram, I'm not going to use Fram. Bubba results put Purolator near the top as the best made filter. So much for BUBBA's consumer report video, very scientific.

I went to a kawasaki forum. Some mule owners claim that a car filter, purolator PL14476 will work. Others claim that filters used on toyotas and other cars, can be us on the mule.

I noticed the old Kaw filter has a by pass valve in it, unlike the lawn mower filters, which those selling lawn mower filters, like the stens, claim they can be used to replace the mule filter. So, I leaning towards finding a good quality car filter instead of using the OEM kaw filter as long as the filter is equal to or better than the OEM filter.

The kaw filter has 3/4 x 16 threads, OD 2 11/16 x height 3 inches. There is plenty of room, so the heigth of the filter can be more.

My question is if it fits, will a car filter work?

If it fits, would a car filter be better to use on a lawn mower engine? I could use the same filter on my JD275 and 3 other brigg mowers.

Which car filter would you use? I know, BUBBA HATES FRAMS. BTW, frams have metal cages.

Anyway to get a cross reference # for a mule filter to car filters?

Thanks George

Well since you ask, I wouldn't get in your opinion unless you ask; but my opinion, would a person really risk oil pressure problems / oil flow problems to risk their Kaw engine, to save $3?
I never would. A heck of a risk, totally negligible return.

first get the specs on the correct filter. then spend a lot of time on the different manufactures web sites most of them give you the specs on there filters. look at the important specs .I think if you look hard enough the manufactures have cross references.
one of the most common filters out there the PH8A or the wix equivalent that I am using fits my truck and use it on a Briggs 18hp,

Did you check e bay. This spring I ouht a case of Kawasaki filters that fit my mule for 15.00 plus shipping. These all had Kawasaki names on them and were the part number that I needed.

I have put a million of those Hastings LF410's on mowers and never had a problem. I change everything at 50 hours. I used to put ac delco's on everything, now Hastings for 4 yrs.

Bosch # 3330 fits 82 dodge car with 2,2 litre.
I use Dodge filters on my 19 HP Briggs.
Relieve valve set between 9-12 and has anti drain back valve.

Dunner,
I have been researching the filter. All I have found so far is a cross reference to aftermarket and stens filters used on lawn mowers. Then late last night on kaw forum, I discovered the kaw guys using car filters for years.

I am glad to hear others are using car filters on their mower engines. I have 2 briggs, 2 kohler, and 2 kaw engines. If I can use a better car filter at less cost. I'm going to use it.

Sorry you are upset because I posted this question. Next time you are upset with me, just don't bother to respond and rain on my post. thank you.

I just got off the phone with the only store in Terre Haute that sells purolator filters, Advance auto. I gave them my kaw # and he crossed it to a purolator(wix) filter, $4.29. Called Kaw dealer in town, they want $11.79. I have a JD275 with kaw engine, bought it used, and it has a sten oil filter on it. So if a sten is good enough for that engine, I'm not concerned about using a car filter. I don't think the stens filter has a anti-drain, by pass device either. I'll know for sure after I replace it and cut it apart.

Glad to know that some of you are using car filters on lawn mower engines with positive results. So, if I can buy a car filter for $4.29 I won't pay twice as much more kohler and briggs filters at rural king. 3 times the price at the mower parts place.

As for the mule, I plan to research that more.

Does anyone have something bad to say about the purolator filter or using car filters on lawn mowers? If so, please link me to the bad reviews.

I still can't find anything about who makes the mule filter, what the specs are. I can see inside my old filter, the mule filter has either a drain back or pressure release in the bottom of the filter. There is no way I plan to use a stens filter on it, even though some places on ebay say I can.

So are there mule owners who use another filter other than a kaw filter? Any mule owners have a cheaper source for kaw filters. My research on ebay shows after shipping they are more.

Who makes the kaw filter? Made in Japan? Any specs on the kaw filter is appricated.

I've been researching alternative filters for 3 days now and not coming up with answering the above questions.

Until I began the research on filters, I wasn't aware a car filter would work on small engines, good to know I think.

MANY THANKS TO U-ALLS.

George I guess I wasted my time the other day on looking up the filter spec. on the Stens filters!!!!!

The filters I looked up for you have ANTI DRAIN AND BYPASS VALVE!!!!!!!

Why else would I post the pressures that the bypass works at!!!!!

Then right behind that I wrote ANTI DRAIN, That means it has an anti drain valve in the FILTER!!!

I have a Stens 120-634 in my hand right now. It does NOT have a plastic separator like some one told you. It is NOT a Fram made filter. It IS made in the USA. I have used them for over ten years with ZERO issue. That is on several Kawasaki V-twin 20 plus HP motors. One has over 3500 hours on it all on Stens filters. I have cut them open and compared them to a JD AM107423 filter (The one JD sells for most Kawasaki motors)the Stens filter looked good to me.

So I don't know what more information you need. It seems like you will listen to some and not others so its your call. I am done.

JD Seller,
Many thanks for your effort. I'm sorry to upset you. You were still a big help. Why were there so many that jumped all over me for suggesting using a stens? It's nice to know that stens is good filter. I have one on my Kaw, came that way when I purchased the used JD275. I would have to ordered a dozen filters to get them at the price I'll pay at Advanced auto for just one. Any idea on the pressure of the relief valve? Do you think car filters are better than a stens or are they the same quality?
Thanks again, and sorry again.
George

George:

Here is the exact line form the list I posted yesterday.

"120-364 9-12 PSI relief, Anti-Drain, 25 micron"

I am in a PO mood today so don't sweat the small stuff. LOL

Half the guys running down Stens filters have never even seen one but like to run down anything they think is inferior.

Truthfully for the little bit of money you would save I would just buy locally. Napa filters are good and WIX is fine. Fram is the only name brand I run from.

Thank you again. I saw your tractor pic. That would cause a mood changing experience. Glad you are safe.

For me, finding a cheaper kaw oil filter was a learning experience, car filters can be used on small engines. Guess a 65 year old person can learn something new.

I know 2 other people who are glad to learn what I discovered. One guy just paid the dealer almost $200 for service, oil change, filter and replaced the oil in front and rear differentials and a new oil filter, $15. Engine takes 2 qts and both differentials less than 3 qts.

My first engine service was over $160, ouch. All of us have decided to change our own oils and filter.

Did you get nervious when it happened your tractor decided to go off roading or after the fact?

Be safe,
George

George, the 3/4-16 thread oil filter is very, very common. Dodge cars and Ford trucks use that filter (as well as others). The cars usually use a small filter and the trucks use a large one. I will list a few of the filters below in different sizes, pick the one with a can that fits the best. I use Purolator so I will list those filter numbers but dont take that as an endorsment as its the "best", its just its a good enough filter for the junk I drive. http://www.purolatorautofilters.net/resources/pages/interchangeguide.aspx

Due your own final research though, check with the manufactor to find what the micron rating is and what the pressure relief valve setting is. If those match and the can fits, you wont have any problems.

PUROLATOR:
L10241
L20195
L10017
L20081
L14670
L30001

I [b:df1ea95295][i:df1ea95295]DONT[/i:df1ea95295][/b:df1ea95295] recommend a Fram filter but they are very common so knowing the Fram numbers may make your search faster. These are the main 3/4-16 oil filters that I have used in the past to find a larger can to fit a specific application I had, there should be a good variety of sizes to find what you need.

FRAM:
PH3614
PH3600
PH16
PH43
PH8A

If you still cant find what you need, do some reading or register over at www.bobistheoilguy.com. Most of the above info has been gone over a million times, Im sure they will find a bunch I missed or give you the numbers for filters other than Fram or Purolator.
