Concrete Water Trough

Would it be as simple as pouring one in a set of forms? I just finished adapting a old horse barn into free stalls for the dry cows. Thinking of pouring one. It would be square or rectangular inside next to the hydrant. Any opinions? Never poured one before

If your where it will be cold then just get a good insulated waterer. That concrete water trough will freeze and crack.

We had one growing up. It was huge - big enough for a swimming pool. I never remember it being dry (it wasn't used to water cattle anymore) but never had a tank heater in it. It must not have cracked as it always held water. Come to think of it, I think one side was sectioned off to keep milk cans cool. I do remember that. It was fed from the water that ran through the shallow trough in the milk house.

Taper the inside wall to thiner at top so there is an angle for the water if it does freeze to slide up and expand so it does not crack. Outside wall vertical, top 8" thick bottom 12" thick. Mine is setting here unused for 40+ years and not broken and is outside.

My neighbor had 2 that were 300' apart fed by the same water and kept the same level. When he went to have the one buried, the hoe did not dig deep enough and the D6 didn't have enough HP to push it in the hole. Had to dig another hole next to and both shoved it in. Didn't break up much. Lots of crete.
