New tires or not?

I have a tractor that I am going to sell soon. It has one new tire on the back and the other one is 1/2 tread and smaller than the new one so it sits funny. The fronts are shot and I had planed on replacing them with new ones but I am wondering if it would be worth it to bite the bullet and buy a new one for the back to match the other one and then sell it or is it worth it or not? The new back tire is about $500 plus mounting so another $650 in the tractor worth having all new rubber on it to sell? The tractor is original never painted sheet metal is good and strait and about 3500 hours on a 54 horse gas engine oh and the paint is not that bad to be a 1969 model tractor. Would you put tires on it or not to sell it? Bandit

Depends if you are talking a $500 tire on a $1000 tractor or a $500 tire in a $10000 tractor.

What do you think when you see new rubber on a machine:
-He takes good care of his stuff
-He wouldn't have put new tires on a piece of junk
-If the tires are new it probably has had good maintenance and been well kept up;

Now what do you think when you see one new tire:
-He put it on because he had to
-He didn't think the tractor would last long enough to justify new tires
-He couldn't afford a pair so what else has he skimped on

All of this and more is what goes through a persons mind when they form a first opinion.
Either scenario above may or may not be true but people pay based on what they see.

On one hand I have seen people pay top dollar for a polished turd and on the other hand I have bought things for cents on the dollar of what they were worth because somebody couldn't be bothered to at least try to make something presentable.

This is one of those questions one sometimes is unsure of the answer. When I look at a tractor to buy tires are one of the first things I look at, Then paint and body then hours and the draw bar and 3pt arms for ware. I am just wondering if $800 to $900 in new tires will be worth another $1000 to maybe $1500 in price to sell or not? I will agree a tractor with new rubber will bring more at an auction but is it worth it in the end? Bandit

Do a quick scan of craigs list and see if there are any decent used ones. Hey, it could happen! I've have seen ads where they obviously had hauled a tractor for scrap and were selling rims with tires.

Don't buy one of those really cheap new ones where the tread lugs are 2 feet apart.

You say mixed sizes on back that is worse than mixed model make of tires of same size. used one against same size new one not so bad but different sizes means problems down the road if not already. So get same size on there even if not new but usuable tires.

Oliver 1555 gas WF and its a 69 model. I bought it as a parts tractor but had to try to get it running, It was easer to get running than I thought it would be and it was to good not to try. So now I will clean her up to sell and buy parts instead. I could not bare to part her out so I guess she will get some new shoes and let someone put her back to work as she should be on a farm. If it was a large tillage tractor, I would say yes. On a 45 year old yard/chore/hobby tractor, I doubt that you would get your money back by putting a second new rear tire on it. It might sell faster with the extra new tire, but you won't get your money back on the tire. On a chore tractor one new rear tire and one marginal rear tire is still better than it would be with two matching marginal rear tires.

How are the fluids: engine oil, antifreeze and hydraulic?

If you don't mind my asking, how much money do you have in it and what do you hope to sell it for? If you bought if as a parts tractor and can sell it running you should get a nice profit.

I think I'd look for set of matched used rears, even if pretty badly worn. Even LIGHT weather check would be OK. Then sell the super good tire for a premium, take what you can get out of the other one. You might be surprised how cheap you can get it done.
