Cab tractor project

If you were to buy and fix up a late 70's to 80's cab tractor, in the 80-110 HP range for hay/loader work. What would you buy, and what are the reasons you would choose that model? Lets assume that most dealerships are readily available for tractors made in that era.

It is hard to tell you without knowing your budget. JD and IH would be the easiest to get parts for. The IH 86 series are pretty cheap horsepower with a fair cab. If your using it more than I would go with JD as I absolutely hate the IH 86 series cabs. So a JD 4240 or a IH 986 would be two candidates.

A non-turbo rowcrop tractor. The turboed tractors were usually the big horse on the farm. They were easily turned up a lot, so during the hard time 1980's they were worked harder than the NA tractors.

For a loader tractor, a Deere 4030/4230/4040/4240 QuadRange would be my first choice for loader work because of the oil clutch, easy one motion synchronized forward-reverse shifting and good cab. Hard starting and possible hydraulic problems from water/brake pad deterioration would be their drawbacks. Case 970/1070 & 2090/2290 power shift would also be good candidates.

On 30 to 40 year old equipment condition would be more important to me than brand.

I agree with JD can't beat a sound guard cab for comfort. Kits to redo the interior are available from several venders. Oh the tractors are pretty decent to. LoL 4430's are starting to be pretty reasonably priced, just be patient and wait for a good candidate.

A case 970/1070 or 2090/2290 would be perfect for
those jobs. The engines are bullet proof and more
fuel efficient than most. 540/1000 rpm pto by just
pulling a snap ring and turning the shaft around.
The power shift tranny in them is great for loader
work and baling since shifting from forward to
reverse is about the easiest of them all. The cabs
are every bit as good as JD and easier to use than
IH. Air conditioners work.

Late White 2-85,2-88,2-105 or 2-110. Nice cab on the later ones, full tub frame for strength for loader work. Unbeatable Perkins engine.

I would go with a 2-85 or 2-105 for the loader work, but baling hay on my contours and hills I have to back up to dump the bale out so it does not roll through a corn field, and I bought a 2705 with 8 speed, it has a shuttle reverse, just excellent for the baler. So a 2675MF. I like Massey and WFE the best.

It would have to be a 986. I use a JD4440 everyday. I really
like the tractor but the quadrange makes me mad. At anything
above A range reverse is too fast, but A range is to slow to do
most work. When I am doing something like using the MoCo
on an odd shaped field I end up riding the clutch to back up as
I am mowing in B2. If I backed up in B1 I would be in the next
county instead of five feet over and back!

We had a 1086 - loved it. If the HP range was bigger that would be my choice.

Here's a 2-105 I bought for 10k. A little high, but it has low hours and was really well cared for.
One of the advantages to the Whites and Olivers is the full frame, which can make working on them easier. Also, some of the components that are built in to other brands are on the outside (hydraulic pump, PTO clutch etc.)
Happy shopping

(quoted from post at 13:12:54 07/29/14) A 105 White is a great tractor as is a 986 .

There's a lot of other model tractors I'd choose to drive over a IHC 86 series. My friend had a 986 that I plowed with that rough rider one day and told myself "never again". Not to mention the SCV levers are in a very inconvenient place for me to operate

How are the cabs on the 2-105 Whites? Fairly quiet? I realize something of that era can't compare to what we have today, but I also want to be able to hear myself think :)

Does the air conditioning keep the cab comfortable enough in hot weather?

For loader work? Something with shuttle or a hydro. I have knee problems and moving bales can make for a ruff day having to do a lot of clutching.

I believe the White cabs of that era had the lowest decibel level of anything available at that time. About 2db lower than the Deere SoundGuard if memory serves me right.
That Perkins engine is a heck of a lot stingier on fuel than a 404 Deere.
