Went to VA today and...

My old Doc has retired. Really liked her and she always did a good job for my health. She had told me that she was going too. I had to see a Pakistani Doc to fill in with his regular patients. I have a hard time understanding everything he says, but get the general rift of what he says. My appointment was for 11 AM and I saw him at 12:30 PM. About the usual. I went to turn in the prescriptions for the ear infection (and blood pressure/thyroid/cholesterol meds) and the gal said it would be a few minutes. Well she didn't say that all the pharmacists (3) went to lunch at the same time. 1.5 hours later it was finally ready. Boy were there some mad people waiting. I mean lots of grumbling and wanting to know why all three went at once instead of staggering it to keep the line moving. Lots said they were going to call and raise some you know what about that. Usually only takes about 15-30 minutes...1.5 hours is a might much. Anyway, ear infection is taken care of, in case anyone is wondering (other post). The doc did say that I need to see an ENT to have another operation to fix it...again, so it will stop doing this to me. ugh, ears can suck. I did cut some more on the N this afternoon just to keep this somewhat tractor related.

In my experience, the VA acts like the are the only game in town. Like owning the only gas station in town, because there is always returning business. There a lot of good people in the VA, some are poorly managed, but for the most part this agency is ran from the bottom up.
My 2 cents.

My experience with the VA. Others might not be so fortunate.
I go to the center in Minneapolis. No health problems, just yearly checkups.
When it gets close to time for a visit I call for an appointment, if they don't call me first. They ask which day of week & time of day is best for me, always get scheduled for about 15 days out. They confirm with a letter within 3 days, & call again about 3-4 days before the appointment.
First stop is the Dracula room for blood draw. Average waiting there is 15 minutes. Then scheduled for Doc visit 2 hours later, gives the lab time to run the tests. Head to cafeteria for some lunch, read the paper,& head upstairs, 20 minutes before my appointment.
Nurse takes vitals such as weight, blood pressure etc, then see Doc on time. He reads lab report, shows me the test results & acceptable range for each. Does the heart, breathing, & such tests, short conversation, & out the door, come back next year.
I plan appointment so still have about 2 weeks supply of prescription left over, so no rush on refills. Doc sends prescription to pharmacy by computer, meds arrive in the mail in 2-3 days.
However, I am only age 74, so when I get old I might have more health issues.

I go to the VA out-patient clinic in Lincoln, NE for my annual physical and a few other things.

The experience is usually about on a par with some private clinics I've gone to.

At my last physical last spring, after the doctor reviewed my blood profile, vitals, and other tests, he said, "Whatever you're doing, keep on doing it".

I was in the Sioux Falls VA yesterday for my 4
month check up and no troubles here. I did get a
shingles vaccination.

Sounds similar to St. Cloud, MN VA, although it"s only an hour between blood draw and dr visit. I"ve had excellent service and care at both facilities. I left civilian clinic in "06 because of poor communication. EX: just received a notice regarding need for colonoscopy. That should have been received in about "08!

I go to the VA out patient Clinic in Akron Ohio now and cant believe how efficient they are, and on time also. Went to the VA Hosp in Asheville NC to begin with and they were so snotty ad aloof, I quit going. Also they tried some shenanigans with my records and I caught them and reported them to tghe Representative in our area. After that they got even nastier to me. It worked because I quit going.
