Water Pump Issue

Can anyone tell me why a new water pump housing on a
JD 620 will not give me the clearance between the
pump and the main tractor casting? I bolted my old
pump onto the radiator tonight and I have a good
3/8" clearance from the bottom of the pump to the
main tractor frame. The new pump only gives me a
.067 clearance and this is with a 3/16" shim under
the radiator. I really need to remove the shim
underneath the radiator as the hood is pushed up
against my steering shaft.

Not trying to give a smart answer, but put the two pumps side by side and see if they are the same. If not then you somehow managed to get/get sent the wrong pump for your tractor. Possibly it's for the same engine in a different application, so it fits in that respect, but not with the rest of the machine. Good luck.

The pumps look to be very close when visually looking at them but when you bolt them to the radiator they are clearly different. I called the company that I had bought the pump from and they are telling me that they never heard this before. It is an aftermarket pump probably from overseas. I am now looking to have my old pump rebuilt:( as they can't tell me why it is not fitting my tractor and I think that I will just waste time by getting another pump from them since it is a cast iron housing.

If you do some measuring you may find that the bearing and seal on the new pump will work on your old housing.
If you have access to a press and take your time you can swap the guts and be good to go.
I used to do this for the water pumps on the chrysler hemi industrial motors, the water pumps were obsolete, the guts from a flathead 6 cyl water pump fit perfect and only took half an hour to swap over.
