Need to know how much a farmall 400 tractor is worth

I have been looking at a farmall 400 gasoline tractor. That is for sale. The tractor needs to be recondition or restored. The tractor is not runing right now and tires look okay but might need to be replaced later. The person wants 2000.00 for it which I fell is to much because it is not runing. Can any body give me any ideal what is a fair price for a tractor that size? Thanks Brent

The motor is loose. He claims that the tractor does run but the dist. is out of time. He had some body doing work to it but it does not run right now. There is no way to find out if the hydrolics work because the engine does not run.

I'd say $2000 should by you a 400 that maybe doesn't look great but at least runs and operates. Without it running you have no way of knowing the condition of things like the TA, PTO clutch, hydraulics, etc. TractorHouse has several listed right now including a decent-looking wide front model with good tires and "good TA, new brakes, partial restore, runs great" for $3250. Makes the one you're looking at look very overpriced.

$2,000 is way too much. I bought a nice running 450 gasser at auction not too long ago for $2,500. Everything worked too including the PS, TA, and 2-point. As it sets going by your description I wouldn't offer more $800.

sounds way to high to me, i wouldn't pay half that for one that don't run. i have to admit that folks seem to be pretty proud of them, there about 5 or 6 of them on CL that they want way to much for that has been on there for months, one person is asking 3000 for one that has no hood or nose piece, doesn't say if it runs or not, it's been on CL for 2.5 years now.

New in 1954 they were $3,500. The JD 70 was comparable in the same time frame and similar power. Today the 400 would probably run approx half the price of the Deere.

A little more detail needed: T/A or T/A delete? Live or standard PTO? Wide front?

That tractor in this region would trade hands for 600 to 700, maybe 800 depending on tires and sheet metal. That's a T/A tractor and IPTO.

If you can't hear it run and try it out then you have no idea of the true mechanical condition.

If all it needs it re-timing distributor then why doesn't the owner do it? I've been told all kinds of things when tractor shopping. 2000 is dreaming.

I gave $500 for this one a few years ago. But it was the buy of all times.

Unless, it has new tires on it. I mean brand new. Then it has almost $2000 worth of rubber alone, and you're getting the tractor for scrap price.

I agree with the others, if the distributor is "out of time" that's a 2-minute repair. He is hiding something, and there is no way he will take 1/3 of his asking price. Walk away.

If its not running its a $600 to $800 parts unit if it is as you describe. Without starting you can't check the TA, PTO, hydaulics, clutch, eletrical, etc.... Just way to many issues that can crop up on a 60 year old tractor to put that kind of money in it without checking first. Then there is the issue of the engine - are you prepared to pay for an overhaul to get it to run?

For $2600 you could get this 450 "restored" with NEW TIRES

Or for the same $2000 there is this 400 with an "honest" ad that admits the TA slips under hard pull:

Say what! now you know I have a JD 70 diesel over here. I use to have a farmall M and till my daddy took it. I just love love big big tractors you know. Brent

I just want to say thank you. I was looking for a fair price to offer this man for his tractor. Now I can offer him a price and walk away if he does not take it. Thank you again. Brent
