PA trip ideas?

Ok... driving to Lancaster/Millersville Pennsylvania area early next week for work, coming from SE Indiana. Not sure til I get there how much time I'll have to explore but thought I'd get some ideas.

So...
Any places to briefly stop on the way in or out? Route will be through Columbus OH, Wheeling WV I-70 to I-76. Any bad construction to avoid? I'm familiar with Columbus and have been to Wheeling in a former life so probably wouldn't be stopping at those.

Anything to do around or in Lancaster/Millersville? Will have one night, maybe 2.

Last, any alternate back roads that don't add too much travel time? Always up for scenery while driving.

Thanks guys!

Tony

Rt 30 is scenic, goes right through downtown Gettysburg, Chambersburg, winds over the mountains. In Somerset county flight 93 memorial and Quecreek miners memorial just off 30. Ohiopyle if you like forested mountains with white-water rapids in Fayette county. Tons to do in Lancaster area but a lot is tourist-trap Amish attractions and shopping outlets. Harley-Davidson plant in York is good if you like that. Pa Capitol building in Harrisburg is impressive also next-door is PA state museum. A more northern scenic route is 322 goes through Penn State University, not as populated but lots of forest. Look at a map, plan a route, Google the towns that you will pass through.

I won"t give advice on places to visit/see other than to say Lancaster area is just nice.

As far as road construction, Pennsylvania only has two seasons, winter and road construction seasons.

Pennsylvania Rail Museum and the Strasburg Railway in Strasburg- about 1/2 hour from Millersville....

I am 20 minutes away. I have a list of chores that need done. I will leave it on the barn door by the fence...
You can always go looking for the amish mafia..
Wengers of Myerstown is maybe 45 min away. You can walk through after hours. Drive through the CNH manufacturing plant in New Holland. They are just off route 23. Just down from Shirk Road.

We visited Gettysburg park last spring, really enjoyed it. My great grandfather was there with the Michigan unit, his 2 brothers were killed there.

I am surprised no one mentioned Shady Maple Buffet, in East Earl, just east of Lancaster. Wonderful place to stuff, er eat at. Might be the largest dining room you'll ever see.

And if they are busy you can watch a movie about the Amish while you wait.

When you come into PA on 70 after about 15 miles look to your right behind a big mall. You'll see a gas rig and I'll wave to you! But in Wheeling there is a Cabelas if you want to stop there. In PA on 70 there isn't much to see/do unless you stop around Washington, PA. There are some neat things around there. A mall, casino, Outlet shopping. Once on 70 youll go through Donegal, then Somerset, Bedford(really neat historic town), Breezewood Etc. But Definitely have to go to the Shady Maple. Amazing smorgasbord. Lots of amish country out there and lots big commercial farms surrounding some of the Amish. If you are in Lancaster you aren't too far from Hershey. Really neat town with museums and an amusement park if you have kids coming with you. When coming back if you want a scenic route and can afford an extra hour or two. Take 81 south out of Harrisburg to 68 across Maryland and WV. Lots of beautiful country there. And 68 will take you to Morgantown, WV where you can take 79 back to 70 or there are a lot of smaller highways that can take you up to 70 anywhere along that route. It will slow you down though as some are windy. If you do take 68 try and check out Ohiopyle state park. Beautiful old waterfalls with lots of history of a grain milling town. And Fallingwaters is near there too. Frank Lloyd Wrights design of a house over a stream. Just some suggestions for you. Enjoy the trip.
