Duramax Error Code P2202 P2203

Good Morning, we were towing with Dad's 2011 3500 Duramax this weekend home from a tractor pull. Keep in mind the truck only has about 13,000 miles on it. As we were going along the check engine light came on. We pulled off at a service station that had an OBD II scanner and the gentlemen said it was:
Code P2202 = NOx Sensor Circ Low Input Bank 1
Code P2203 = NOx Sensor Circ High Input Bank 1

At the same time we asked each other when was the last time that we added the DEF Fluid. We know we added it twice so far but went ahead and put some more in. The tuck took 5 GALLON, and the truck only has a 5 Gallon tank. The manual says the truck is supposed to give you a warning 1000 miles out, 500 miles, out, 300, 150, 50 and then limp the truck when you run out. None of this ever happened.

Do any of you guys have any input on this situation. We made an appointment for the truck. Can it be used to tow in the meantime? Thanks

Rich, the 2011 has some notable differences between later years. Dad's 2011 only gives you warnings at the mileage increments. (Or its supposed to anyway) The 2011 also does not have as insulated of a DEF tank as later models. From what I have read this was a bit of a problem in Canada as far as the DEF fluid freezing.

My 2014 has a menu option on the drivers information center that says "DEF FLUID: OKAY". I have yet to see any message other than "okay"

I myself would have preferred a dipstick, sight glass, or a real gauge on the gauge cluster. to monitor the DEF levels. Knowing now that we may not get the notification to add some more, I can assure you that we will keep it filled up.

By chance, did you replace the gas cap with one of those locking caps? Just a guess, but it sounds like the level sensor in the DEF tank is shot, and set off those codes because you ran out of DEF. Im almost positive theres an update to the programming for something similar, if it pertains to the 11s as well as the 08s & 09s. My 08 set of one of those, dont remember which now.

Christopher I hope I can help I have been working on Duramaxs since day 1. The 2011 DEF system has been quite problematic they were completely different from 2012 on mainly in software issues. The truck will need a NOx sensor for the codes but will need the programming updated for the DEF level issue. The level sensor is part of the tank and I have found it best to replace the complete tank assembly if further issues arise. Your dealer should be able to do this, good luck. Matt G.
