Ear Infection?

This ain't any fun when I'm trying to finishing bush hogging around here! Ugh, If there is anything I would rather not have, it would have to be a dad gum ear infection. Yeah, I use an 8N so it is tractor related. I was doing some cutting the other day and my nose was running, maybe allergies or something, and I woke up yesterday and my ear was infected. How in the he** do I keep that from happening again? Don't feel too good either. I've had a hole in that ear drum from way back in the Navy days and this happens every long now and then. Got to be some way to avoid this from happening. This usually is more of a winter/head cold type of event if I have been really sick. I have a regular annual at the VA tomorrow so they can give me some antibiotics to fix it. It usually takes two rounds of the antibiotics to completely get rid of this too. Anyone else have a problem with the ear? It might go a year or two and not have a problem and then, Wham! One or two in a year. argh! I actually had this fixed a bout 20 years ago by an ENT. They put you to sleep and then cut the ear off and go in and clean out the spongy bone where the infection is harboring. Then fix the little ear parts inside and make a new ear drum out of the skin from behind the ear. Then sew the ear back on. Yeah, that one is just a little lower than the other side...maybe he had a stiff drink or two and wasn't seeing too good that day...lol

If you had all that stuff done to your ear, You may have no choice. I"ve had regular ear infections pretty much from when I was a baby and I am 49.

What I do when I bushhog: I wear a dust mask AND hearing protection. Not the flimsy dust mask everybody sells that doesn"t do anything, one with 2 straps so it seals to my face and it is thick enough to stop the dust. I bought 3M masks for years but the last box said ACE Hardware on it and was from far off Cathay. (but they do work)

Yes it is HOT! but its well worth the discomfort. The last guy I recommended them to insisted he would never be caught wearing such operating a tractor. If that is the way you feel, well I guess you have to deal with the consequenses.

How it works for me: I get the stuff up in my nose, then it runs down in my throat and from there up the ear canal while I am sleeping and then infection sets in up in the ear.

The last box of 10 was about $16-18. A box of 10 is a lot cheaper than a pack of 2 for $5 or $6. I don"t know how many boxes I can buy with the cost of 1 Dr. visit.

I had ear infections as a kid, very painful.

Are you taking any antihistamine to control control your sinus/runny nose problem first? Loratadine is one non-drowsy generic available over the counter anywhere. Ask your doctor for a recommendation.

Good luck.

I use Hylands earache drops and when I have run out of that I have used Neosporin on a Q-tip.

That is exactly what is going on. I have used the cheapo paper masks and they don't do very well as you said. I have some nicer one's like you spoke of, from different painting events around here. Guess I need to start using one. Bad dust/grass stuff flying around when bush hogging. Thanks.

I have antihistamines forever and they don't don't help much, I do take a couple before bed to beat it back while I am sleeping. I will give the Loratadine a try. The Dr. prescribed stuff doesn't do a thing.

I still have some antibiotic drops from the last one about 6 months ago. That does help to beat it back until I can see the Doc for a shot/more drops/pills. One thing they usually do is give me a steroid shot and an antibiotic shot then pills and that knocks it out quick. The neosporin on a q-tip is a great idea!

I just finished cutting for about 2 hours and my throat is very scratchy and nose running like crazy. I've still got about 5 more acres to finish in the morning and that will do it for awhile. Too much rain the last month and the fields grow like crazy. I need about 5 cows to keep this eaten down. Horses use to keep it right, but they are long gone when the kids got grown. Thank God 'n Greyhound They're Gone! :?

Well just heck! The dad burned ear infection is back. I told that Pakistani doc (VA) that the other (now retired doc) always gave me an antibiotic shot and a steroid shot and then powerful antibiotic pills to take. Well the Pakistani idgit only gave me the pills, no shots. So after two weeks the infection is back, of course. So I went to the local Doc-in-a-Box and told him the situation and he said that is exactly what he was thinking to do...two shots and pills to knock this thing out. I am just about to give up on the VA after about 25 years of fairly good service. I've only been having this problem my entire life with the ear, so I know what works and what doesn't by now. Unless the Pakistani doc has discovered a new and exciting treatment....just give me what works! By the way, the doc today said that was a mess in there and I need to get it fixed by an ENT soon. So they both got that part right...lol. Nutin' I didn't already know though.
