well, we finally got the old 10k generator back up and running thanks to the good knowledge of the kind folks here on YTC. first i told the old man to put some ATF in the cylinders and let it sit for a few days and in the mean time i told him to boil the carburetor in some soapy water for a few hours. the fuel pump was leaking and we ordered a rebuild kit for it but after 2 weeks they emailed us and said they couldn't get it any more (story of our lives) so we ordered a new one. we fired it up and it would run good for awhile and then start freaking out, sputtering and all so we started going thru the electrical, he took off the coils for the mag and sanded them clean and wa-la it was is running like a top. whew !!! finally !!!

Hi Jen,
As you have not welded for 35 years/ and old rods
I will be polite and say I"ve seen worse, in truth
I have a used loader here, I pulled from an old
tractor looks way worse!.
I guess as you seem to be into off the grid
living and recycling. it might be time to go get
new welding rods, and recycle the old ones as
paint stir sticks, or something else much more
useful than for welding.
With the new rods you will be surprised how much
better things go.
I was doing a project for a customer and ran out
of my usual brand rod.I Tried something else that
was on the shelf in town. I can weld good but
with the change in appearance of the weld, I could
of upped my welding rate $20 an hour L.O.L
please Show us some more pictures with the new
rods, when you get them. That weld is not really
fair to comment on now.
Regards Robert

I see by the pics. that you have welded with tennis shoes before. I did that once when I was in a hurry. I try not to anymore.

I've noticed DH is now old man in your last few posts!!??
No comment on the welding, except test it before you use it.Mark

Lets put it this way,...You're a hell of lot better welder than my wife.
As for the weld,..it'll hold.
What are you building anyway?.

PS,..i like your welding table,..looks really sturdy.
Don't do a James now(or a Bison) and drop that project on you feet.

that there is a custom anvil, i've got body parts and other pieces of metal that i have to bang on till they resemble what they are supposed to look like. it's my design and i think it will serve quite well, well, im hoping anyway, time will tell. i'll post the results, good or bad, if ya don't believe me, just give that weld job i did a second look. :)

eah in that case you could give it a few more beads with some good 7018 rods :)
Me thinks that "anvil" is gonna ring pretty good once you lay into it with a BFH,..don't forget the earplugs

PS,..why not use a piece of used rail track as anvil, and i don't mean a rail track that is still in use in its intended purpose lol

yes, and he is lucky i am calling him that. he is bi-polar and he is taking my cancer thing way harder than i am, if that is possible. we are not married, but i used to refer to him as DH because i was gonna marry him, maybe some day, i always held off sox with him cause i wasn't quiet sure. he took me in when my ranch got foreclosed on back in 2011, he took me under his wing and protected me from all of the evils circling on the prey. now a days it's a different story, when they told me i had cancer and it is inoperable, i applied for disability, it took me 6 mo's to save up for my oliver with the meager allowance they give me, and when i bought it, he cut me off financially completely, he gets almost 5 times what i do a mo and wants to bum off me. he's a control freak and don't want me to be independent from him. if i could afford to get in the van and leave for good, i would do it in a heartbeat, i have never had a thumb on me in my life, and i am gonna figure out how to get from under this one you can bet on it. oh, by the way, does anyone need an old broken down city raised, farm bred gal that is on her last leg. ? if so my email is open.

I'll say it..... the first pass in the second pic is a good one! the rest... not so much and just standing there without getting an elbow down leads to shaky welding

orry to hear that Jenn.
I don't know what to say.

yup - that looks very familiar to anybody that's ever stick welded! Most would be happy with that.

But you're halfway there - they should hold, but now you want to get them smoother so they're pretty.

Standing without any support to lean on can make it tough - especially with a new full length rod. Might also guess that you're trying to do little "e"'s like so many people tell you to do.

Next time try going in a perfectly straight line, forget the e's or any back and forth "stitching". And don't rush. Go slightly slower than you think you should. One smooth fluid motion - I bet you'll see them smooth out quite a bit.
