My JD 970 fuel gauge goes to extreme full on start
up and stays there, no matter whats in the tank.
Has anyone been thru this before, or could someone
offer me a clue as to where to look..
Thanks up front,
Tony

Need to test the circuit to find the problem.

First, give it a visual inspection, look for pinched, chewed, cut wires. Be sure the tank and sending unit are grounded to the chassis.

Disconnect the wire from the sending unit, see if the gauge falls to empty. If it does, the problem is in the sending unit.

If it stays on full with the wire disconnected, ground the wire and see if the gauge goes to empty. (Some work backward, just need to check to be sure.) If it does, the problem is in the sender.

If removing and/or grounding the wire make no difference, go to the back of the gauge and remove the sending unit wire (Not the power wire). If the gauge falls to empty, the wire is shorted to ground somewhere.

If it stays on full with the wire disconnected, the gauge itself is bad.
