If you could see me now you'll see hearing aids tucked behind my ears. It's been imminent for some time now but I finally took the plunge and was tested. 50% hearing loss! It's some supposedly experimental design I'm 'testing' for them for six weeks. Then if I want them they knock some off the price but the manufacturer won't even tell the dealer how much they cost so........... Anyway, I love them. I can even hear my fingers hitting the keyboard now. They come with a remote control I can use to turn them up or down or shut background noise down but it stays on my desk. Anyway you can't whisper any secrets behind my back now LOL I have a pretty good idea what they will cost so when it comes time for the dealer to tell me what the cost is I'll just conveniently turn the volume down. WHAT? HOW MUCH? Jim

Edit, this is tractor related, how do you think I got this way?

I got tested a few years ago. What a difference they can make.

Old guy in for a checkup. Doc ask him if he went and got his hearing checked. Old man says he did. Doc says well it must be nice being able to hear again and I bet your family loves being able to talk to you again without shouting. Old man says, they don't know, I just set back listen and change my will.

I have done the same as you. A little over a year ago I went & got tested. I wasn't quite at the 50% loss but close. I bit the bullet & bought a quite expensive pair & wear them all the time & love them. The day I picked them up I drove out of the parking lot & flipped on my turn signal & for the first time in years I could hear the turn signal blinking. I then drove home & walked in the house & turned on the kitchen lite & do you know light switches make noise when you turn them off & on. I should have bought them years ago but I either couldn't afford them or wouldn't afford them & would have bought some cheap pair & would have hated them. I did some research before I bought them & am glad I bought the more expensive pair.

My day is coming... Haven't been tested, but my wife tells me I need to be!

I'm glad there are some improvements being made. I've heard all the bad stories about them picking up background noise instead of what you're trying to hear.

Wondering about the remote, does it have mute buttons labeled "wife", "kids", "boss", "politicians", etc? If so, I'll buy one now! LOL

Just picked up two new hearing aids from VA yesterday after 16 years of my wife telling me I needed them. I too had about 50% hearing loss and I am hearing a lot of sounds that I had not heard in decades. Also can hear much better on the telephone. Took a long time to wade through the VA paperwork, but sure is worth. Happy Birthday to me. I just turned 67 a couple of weeks ago.

please be seated when they tell you the price so you don't fall and crack your skull open when you hear the price. i pushed the old man to go get tested for them and they are not covered by the way, the price was completely insane, anyway that's a cross we will both have to carry, unless we win the lottery that is.

Shoot, fixerupper... a lot of young people wear HA
too. So just act like a kid and nobody will know
the difference! :)

One word of advice:
(I used to be a hearing aid tech in the audiology
section of Mayo Clinic)
Ask your audiologist about a "Super Dri-Aid" jar
(I think the brand we sold was HAL-HEN). It is a
jar of desiccant pellets that draw moisture out of
the aids. You just place your hearing aids inside
each night and put the lid on.

The pellets are blue and white... when they begin
losing their color, you can dump the pellets into
an oven safe dish and bake them to reactivate
their desiccant properties again. Cool them and
put them back in the jar. (Eventually you will
need a new jar -- but they last quite awhile.)

mine are in the mid price range and were $4000--work good for amplifying but not so great for certain frequencys--had them readjusted about 5 times but some words are still difficult to understand

Rusted I thought about that. The company is making millions off of these things and then they expect me to pay for them after I've been the guinea pig. I'm guessing the bill will be $5000 for two little pieces of plastic I can lose in my pocket. The dealer said knowing how much they will cost will affect the guinea pig's ideas on how well they work. A true test would be for them to have me sample several different price levels of aids instead of just this one version. The dealer said these are middle of the road. jim

Sorry, Steve, there's only one mute. LOL When Marilyn and I left the audiologist's store, and were walking toward the car she said something to me but the traffic noise in the background drowned her out. I did not have the background noise blocking turned on, but she might have been drowned out anyway, only at a lower level. Jim

These are Audibels but my step mother's Belltones look exactly the same as mine. There are several different levels of quality and these are supposed to be mid-line. I have flat line hearing loss, meaning I've lost every tone pitch equally. The audiologist said I'm only the second person he's seen this way. He said I'm an easy one to fix. Jim

My uncle got some at Cosco. Saved about half over the dealer price for exactly the same thing.

Like the rest of you I put off hearing aids for some time. Cost and the fact that my friends that bought them rarely used them. They said they are a pain ! When I bit the bullet I remembered years ago when I got glasses. Did not like them but I knew I had to wear them and get used to them which I did.

Did the same with the new hearing aids and finally got used to them. Took a while but now I look forward to putting them on in morning. Cost a lot but worth it. I even hear a little better when I take them out at night then I did before I got them.

Still seems they should not cost as much as they do, $4000 and change, but guess I should be glad as they are high tech. Automatically adjust for background noise, do not squeal on their own like Grandpa's used to at the worst possible time.

Oh, did have one ear infection since I got the hearing aids. Dr. said be sure and clean the plastic insert that goes in ear after each days use. Wasn't doing that. Wife got box of little individual wrapped alcohol swabs. Clean with one of those when I remove them at night. No more trouble since doing that so far.......Knock on wood !

Joke with my friends that I was going to trade for a new Pickup last year. They look at my 2007 Ford Sport Trac and ask why I didn't. Two reasons,#1 Ford decided I don't need a truck the size of the Trac and quit building it.#2 I point to my ears and said I bought hearing aids instead of trading trucks. Now I can't afford any size truck ! (grin)

My wife got hearing aids two years ago. They have the remote, also. They would have cost us $7400, but with the American Legion discount they were something like $4100.

I got both of mine on the 14th of July,Remote control and all, 2 metal boxes to keep them in when not using great devices.A lot of my hearing loss was due to jet engines, now I have the 3rd hing coming up, eye surgery, and that is on the 29th of this month for the left eye, then in August, the right eye will be done. I have my false teeth, but have to go back for some work on them.Hard to get used to the taste of food, or lack thereof, sure wish I could have afforded the implants, would have been so much nicer, but I'm not complaining,as I thank the Good Lord for them all.
Regards,
LOU
