Have seen wooly bear caterpillars out in the fields already and yesterday noticed the size of the hedge apples are about 2/3 of full size. Does this indicate an early fall or frost or a hard winter??

Well I don't know, but to add too your list....I have fall grass in my lawn that is rather early this year, noticed it 3 weeks ago. Along with very low temps in the mornings and very heavy dews. I say winter will be early and COLD!

Fourth of July weekend I saw some staghorn sumac with red tops. That's normal to see in August. It could be that I just never noticed them earlier before.

Like rrlund, I would be inclined to attribute all of this to past weather and not some magical ability of bugs and weeds to predict the future. There is no AlGorerithm for trends in climate. Those that attempt it tend to end up with egg on their faces.

Noticed this week that the "birds of a feather are starting to flock together" on high line wires already... thought it seemed just a bit early for that too.

If we are to believe the so-called weather experts, they say we are in an El Niño. During an El Niño we are supposed to have warmer dry winters and cooler wet summers. So far they are right about the cooler wet summer.

thats what happened with my pumpkins a year ago. By the time we had the Grandkids here for pumpkin carving, hayride bonfire fireworks in October, a lot of mine were no good. Had to go buy pumpkins. I planted much later this year. In fact they are just now setting blooms. We will see how this goes. gobble BTW I m glad you are able to post again. I value your experience and knowledge.

In IN we are on track to have the coolest July in 143 yrs, last night it dipped to 56 degrees.Plant growth is slowed by these temps. Our corn looks good but is a bit behind schedule for this calendar date. There is good potential yield there. Our soys are a good bit behind for this time of year, we still have 70-75 days growing season left. Some soys look not so good from late planting.

Supposedly, the Midwest has been in a "polar vortex" again, like last winter- so colder than normal.

Been warmer and dryer than normal here for the past month or so- garden is going great guns, except for the peas, which don't like it much.
