dog or no dog

my red heeler saved my but today from a new moma cow he is always with me wherever I go and I intend to keep it that way. That being said I know of others that believe the presence of a dog or predator in the bovine mind may cause more stress and aggressive protective behavior what do you think?

I had a Blue Heeler that was born on a registered Hereford bull outfit. He and his momma and siblings were working when I got him (just weaned) Best dog I ever had.

For me, it depends on the cattle and the situation. If the cattle are naturally aggressive, breeding, calving, strangers are present, or some other stressing situation, a dog does make the situation even worst. But a dog can also act as a rodeo clown to draw the animal's attention.

In normal conditions when the cattle are relaxed and docile, I prefer the dog not be around to spook them. For me, the same goes for dogs around hogs or sheep. I find things go smoother if a dog is not around when I'm working with animals. It might be different if the dog was a good herd dog and the animals are very used to having the dog around, but I've never had that.

I will cull out overly aggressive animals.

I have learned if ya want a good cattle dog They need to learn to respect each other and they Will. I have a very good dog with cattle he listens to me and will stop when I say stop if I tell him to getum or get it He will and Quits when I say . The cows leave him alone and he them When they are in the same pen when were not moving them If the gate gets opened to drive in with a tractor he moves them away from the gate. He is 1/2 boarder collie and 1/2 lab. .If I open a gate to move cows he will put them in a group and move them to the gate.

Cows that know the dog will be fine. Ours don't mind either of our dogs. A Jack Russel Kirby and a yellow mutt Sadie. Sadie even gets to chow down on placenta in the pasture if the cow doesn't want it. Better her than the coyote, and it saves me dog food.

It's all what they grow up with.

If they've seen the dog on a regular basis since birth - it's merely an annoyance, not something that's really going to stress them out.

for the record, I am not a licensed cow psychiatrist, so I do not know this for sure.

We had a friendly, happy-go-kucky dog that would not chase an animal for anything. If you told him "sic 'em", he'd just stand and look at you with an exoression thatindicated "I ain't mad at that animal, so I'm not going to chase it! He wouldn't even grab a rabbit that ran right by him.

One day the neighbor's scrub bull came over, got into our pasture and started a fight with our purebred Shorthorn bull. I took the 8N into the oasture and tried to ram the bull to break up the fight. About that time Spot hurled himself at the scrub bull, bit him right on the end of his nose and hung on. Bull tried to shake him off but Spot wouldn't let loose.

Bull finally ran for the gate and headed home. As soon as the bull got off the property, Spot let loose and trotted back home. That bull never came back again.

No two ways about it if the cows aren't used to the dog being around. I had some penned in the barn and the dog came in. They weren't used to him and liked to killed me.

When my neighbors away and I tend to his cattle, I check each day for new calves. Some morning I know a cow has a new calf, but can't find it, all I gotta do is let sugar out of the truck, ole cow runs straight to the calf.

My cattle are used to my dogs. They don't pay much attention to them at all. Strange dogs get chased off usually.

One of my dogs is a lab/collie mixed dog that will watch over any calves he is around. I have seen him run coyotes and strange dogs off. I need a video camera to catch him playing with older calves. The calves will chase him and then he will chase them. After they both have enough he lays down and most of the calves will come right up to him.

My oldest son has a pair of Australian Shepherds. They are trained cattle dogs. They will handle cattle better than any human can hope too. Even cattle that are not used to them. A big part of them being so good is that they are around my son just about 100% of the time he is outside. IF you see the dogs he will be there close. They work with cattle everyday.

Best cow dog we ever had was a St. Bernard. When it was milking time we'd turn him into the pasture and tell him to go get the cows, he'd take out after the cows, a few minutes later we'd see the lead cow chasing the dog back to the barn. The old lead cow had issues with the St Bernard, she wouldn't blink or even get up for the other two dogs on the place but got a little cranky if the St Bernard was in any of the cattle pens.

Can't speak to cow dogs, but I wouldn't be able to make it without my sheep dogs. We don't even see coyotes around anymore since we got them.
