OT Yamaha Golf Car Problems

The golf car is acting up. It's an old one from the mid 80's. It runs fine 1/2 throttle or more. 1/2 throttle or less, is cuts out, run and die, run and die. I put it up on blocks this afternoon and started it up. Once you wind it up, it runs great. When you slow down, it keeps cutting out and picking back up. Any ideas?? I just put a new spark plug in it before this started. Thanks, Chris

Sounds like something clogging the idle circuit. I would try easing the carb apart, spray out the passages with spray cleaner and compressed air if you have it. If you take any jets out be sure to note where they go, some of the Japanese carbs have several that will have the same thread but different size hole.

Also look over the wiring, especially the engine kill wire. Could be rubbed through and different engine vibrations causing it to short out.

have two of them here
there is a linkage that connects from the carb to a butterfly valve right at the begining of the exaust pipe
if it becomes disconected which happens regularly here dur to rough terrian or the butterfly valve is burnt out it's only a tin plate will cause those symtoms as well also causes them to backfire

I have a Yamaha of the same age and with a similar problem. I think on mine it is the worn out holes for the throttle plate causing a lean mixture at real slow speeds. So I just floor board the sucker and enjoy the ride. TDF

When my older Yamaha acted up something similar it was the throttle shaft bushings were leaking causing her to suck in air and lean out at lower RPM (higher vacuum) operation. I couldnt find replacement bushing and shaft assembly so a new carb completely cured my problem. Ive used EZ Go and Club Car but never had a cart that idles so smooth and sweet and takes off so easy as a Yamaha I LOVE THEM

I forgot, if a vacuum leak is the problem (causes poor idle leaning out at low RPM when vacuum is highest) you can find it by spraying say WD 40 or Carb Cleaner etc all around the carb and carb to head gasket and if she speeds up and smoothes down you found the leak.

Ive seen a vacuum leak around the gasket from carb to head, look for that as it can cause problems at idle or lower RPM.
