car tires on front of tractor

I'm wanting to change my front tires to car tires because the 3 rib destroy the lawn when brush hogging timber. Will any width work or do I need to change something. Thanks

Go to Gensco, and get 16 ply aircraft tires. It will be the last front tires you'll have to buy, and they won't tear up your lawn.

For work like that I've had excellent luck running used car tires on the front of my wide front Super M.

Get the widest tires that will fit the rims and you will be good to go.

White-Walls would look good...

Try to get Bias tires, they steer easier..but, snow tires will have more traction..

Ron.

We put a pair of well used heavy truck tires on the
front of the Cockshutt 40. They are 7.50x16 and I
think at least 6 ply, maybe 8 ply. That was in the
late 1970s and those tires have never failed in all
these years. Not much traction for turning of
course.

Width of the tire will depend on the width of your rim.
What size tires are your 3 ribs?
Mine was supposed to have 6.50 x 16 three ribs and I
have a set of old truck snow tires on it. 7.00 x 16 I think.
I would have to go check to be sure.
I have to ask though, if you're "brush hogging timber" in the
lawn, why would you worry about cutting up a little grass?

mick, The rims you have will determine what size tire you can run on those rims.
You didn't say if you tractor has a FEL on it or not! Passinger car tires are worthless if you have a loader on your tractor!!!!!!! No side wall strengh!
I have been running Airplane tires on my 966 for close to 20 yrs. My first set went 10/11 yrs my second set had about 7 yrs now.
Get a set from Gensco @ Houston, Tx with wheels already mounted and with sealent all ready to go. for cheaper money that a set of Tri-Rib tires alone! I will never go back to ribbed tires on my main tractor! Hope this helps.

John A.

I removed the three rib tires on the front of my 2444 with loader and replaced them with mud/snow tires to get a flat tread. It works much better in soft ground now. The Three rib would push mud out the side and sink much more than the flatter tread.

The upper part of my orchard area is lawn and on 3 sides is hilly light timber that I hog, and I have to turn around a lot in the grass to hog this area.

Yeah, car tires won't hold up under a loader. If you get anything get truck tires.

If you are turning real sharp, no tires are going to prevent lawn damage. The only solution is to make wider turns.

We had one of the first Ford 6000 in the early 60's. My dad didn't like the narrow 3 rib tires because they would go down in the mud too easily.

So he took a tourch and cut off the rim of the. Removed the center of a car tire and welded the rim of a car tire to the center of the old ford rim. Tires wobbled a little, but it worked better.

Bubba and Billy Bob helped.

Get some implement tires, I went with wider rim and reversed it on my 6610. Reversing does put more stress on spindles, but I just take it easier when turning with a lot of weight on the loader.

George,

Your ingenuity made me chuckle this morning, I can usually count on one a week from you.

LOL

The best non standard tire for old tractors is a mobile home tire and rim with centers made from 3/8" flat steel welded in and drill for lugs and cut out center. Looks great on my 8N.

David g,
I must get it from growing up on a dairy farm and having a Father that, for most of his life, was a farmer.

There weren't too many things he couldn't do.

I had a CA Allis-Chalmers that needed front tires, after some checking I found the bolt pattern to be the same as a 50s/60s Dodge/Plymouth. Had to put a spacer behind the wheel because the hole was smaller but they worked.
