Propane tanks

I want to change propane companies. My old company has been bought out by a larger company, and the cost per gallon is over 50c per gallon higher than another local company. The tank is property of the propane company, but the gas in it is mine, right now it is at 70% full. How do I change this up at the least expense? The new company says it cannot fill another companies tank.

I would buy a tank from the new company, and either see if they will pump the fuel from the old to the new tank, or just wait til you have used up the fuel to switch . Then have old company come get their tank.

Have another tank set up next to the original then when the first runs out switch the line to the new tank and tell the original dealer to get his empty tank. This won't work unless you have room and know how to relight the pilots.

Why not just BUY the existing tank from the new company, then you'll own both the tank & it's contents and you can chose which ever supplier you want. Simple.

I told my old supplier to come get their tank. They did credit me for what was left in it and they must of guessed off the tank gauge and not measured it. Joke was on them as that gauge was messed up !

Local Amerigas has tanks stacked up behind the building like cord wood. Bet they won't sell any either ! Plenty of used tanks around but seems like you can't find many for sale.

I bought my own tank 5 yrs ago, $ 1000. Brand new 500 gallon tank. I buy propane from 2 suppliers, I just call to see who has the lowest price and I am not at their mercy on when they feel like filling it either, I can just call the other guy.

I bought my tank about ten years ago and never loooked back. The old supplier told me I wasn't using enough and wanted to charge a 100 dollar fee for account inactivity. I had a new tank sitting next to theirs and yopne pumped into it. Called and told em come get it or its 100 dollars storage or a bullet thole in it ......gone the next day when I got home. I can and do shop for propane. You will be suprised at the cash that can be saved.

I just recently went through the same thing. The NEW company brought out one of THEIR tanks, set it beside the existing tank, and then transferred the contents from one tank to the other. They then moved the old tank out of the way, and set the new, now full, tank in its place. I then called the old company and told them to come get their tank. Took about 1 week, and it was gone.

If you can get your new company to SELL you a tank, go for it. When YOU own the tank, you are free to do as you please with it, and buy propane from the least costly source.

Not ALL propane suppliers will sell you a tank. My new company will only rent them, not sell them. I haven't figured that one out. YET.

Wonder what would happen if you hooked up both tanks in battery with a valve to switch between them? Then you could buy gas from both companies, whoever is cheaper. Most propane companies I have dealt with are PITA's, Seems all the bad apples in Cable TV companies switched to propane companies when the cable folks had to clean up their act.

I'm not real enthused to enter into a business relationship with a company that wants exclusive rights to my business. It's usually crooks, the criminally incompetent our under performers who want a deal where you can't go elsewhere. That kind of deal leads to overcharging and poor service.

I just traded my 500 gal tank for a 1,000 gal. They pumped 300 gal from the old tank into the new one. Took about 20 minutes. Brand new 1,000 was $1800.00 and the gave me $500.00 for the 500 which was what I payed 5 years ago.

where can I buy those $1800 1000 gal tanks. around here [northwest Ohio] used 1000 gal tanks go for more than that. Our truck takes longer than that to pump that mush gas from one tank to another. As for switching companys we set our tank next to the one to be replaced and simply use up gas in old tank than hook up new tank. As for pumping out gas I am sure the old company will charge a lot if they will do it.

Do yourself or have new company set a hundred pound tank there. Use all the gas from first tank, switch to the hundred pounder while the tank exchange is made and put the new tank back in original spot.

I did the same thing for the same reason Spook.
Amerigas bought out the local company.
When they picked up my tanks they credited me for the gas in them.
You might just call them and ask them if you will get a credit.

(quoted from post at 21:38:15 07/23/14) Jennifer, if you own the tank, you can choose who you want to fill it. Or use a different supplier whenever you want.
That's true here too Mo. My brother bought his tank last year
expecting to go with the lowest priced supplier when needed.
Turned out the lowest price for a while was near $5.00/gallon.
Mine was pre-paid with a rented tank at $1.65/gallon.
Sometimes you're the windshield, sometimes you're the bug. :)

I own my tank and take bids every year, there are four suppliers to pick from so they compete. I get the best rates from the farm coops.

There seems to be some legal issues when switching from one supplier to another. Probably liability from filling a system that is sub - standard. The new supplier may want to inspect the system which might include a leak check and a check of all regulators for age. Bought another farm a couple of years ago which had been supplied by another company. They were somewhat reluctant to fill the tank on the house and the tank on the grain drier. I explained the piping had been updated and they took the new farm on. Owned all of the tanks.
