O/T Donating Blood, Platelets, Plasma

Last October the Red Cross called me since I was a regular blood donor and wanted to know if I would donate platelets. I started then in early October and been doing it since. The last two times they also took plasma. I'm now up to donation 45 and look forward to my next appointment. Donation 48 will be my 6 gallon mark.

My dad was a big donor for years, so was I. Then I saw the RC in action a couple times. I don't donate blood or money anymore.

I started donating blood when I was a teenager. I was so hard up for a few years that I sold my plasma. I donated platelets for a lady that I worked with who had some kind of bad cancer.

After donating blood for many years, about 10 years ago the Red Cross got a false positive for hepatitis C out of my blood. I immediately went to my family doctor and had a new test run. It was negative.

However, the Red Cross banned me for life due to their false result on the test.

Oh well.

way to go. I am with you. I donate every 8 weeks if I give whole blood or 16 weeks if I do doubles. I think I just passed the 16 gallon mark. Not bad at the age of 50. Imagine what it would be if I would have started as a teenager. I started in my mid 20's

I've tried doing doubles a couple times but both times I ended up with a headache for the next couple days. Now I just stick with a normal donation.

Years ago, when working for the State of Vermont, several of us would donate blood. We would joke that we were doing it for some politician or high government official- every last measure of our devotion, etc. I wouldn't give money to the Red Cross because of the politics and the organizational problems, however, blood is different. They sell it to hospitals and patients are billed(probably with a big hospital markup), but consider this- the Red Cross has to pay employees, pay for expensive tests and supplies, none of that comes cheap. They provide a valuable service and with diseases and accidents there is a need. Congrats to all who give. Rand
