Most often now our computer has a blink then goes dead (black) then flashes back and says display driver has failed and re started. It shuts off and restarts then says computer was not shut down correctly and press enter to re-start, which we do.
It will work for a while then start all over again. We restored to an earlier date and that took care of it, but now the computer says we can't and only can empty everything out and start over.
It also says we could contact our group provider and get an OK, but dealing with Microsoft is a big waiting game.

It is a HP computer desktop with tower, and less than 4 yrs old.

Any idea how to stop the display driver from getting this glitch without wiping the whole system and starting over?

Any help would be appreciated.

That really smells like a malware thing.

However, I'd pull the cover and check the fan on the video card to make sure is running and not plugged up with dirt, etc.

Lou- make sure your monitor cables are tight and secure. Sometimes they will work loose.

I know...I've had that happen to me a few times.

Greg

It may not be the answer to your problems but, that is first thing to check

If you know (or can figure out) the model of the video card you can go to the manufacturer"s web site and get the latest driver. A Microsoft update might be fighting with what you have, and Windows doesn"t always find the latest one.

But I"m inclined to agree with Allan, sounds like it"s overheating. Could also be a component failing, it happens.

lou if you are not running any virus and malware software, go to ninite.com . it is a website that has free software. my computer guru buddy uses it to load missing software and free virus programs. when you get to ninite website look on the left for a category called security. check the boxes for avast, malwarebytes, adaware and super (its super anti spyware) then click the get installer button. it will package and download the software for you. then run each application. it will clean up any viruses, malware, spyware and ad ware tracking software off your system. i also run mozilla firefox.

If you have pets and have never opened your case you will be surprised at the amount of dust and pet hair computers collect. first take it outside and remove cover and shake out all the dust and hair. then blow out the rest with can air from computer store (DO NOT USE COMPRESSED AIR FROM AIR COMPRESSOR!) too high of pressure and may contain dirt and water!

I have an HP doing the same. The only thing to save it being used as target practice several times is an elementary school across the road. TDF

Thanks for all the answers.
Tomorrow I'll get a can of compressed air and clean it all up. If that fails, I ordered some 220 grain rifle bullets from Midway today, and will load them up for the 300 Win Mag and have a Battle of Midway against HP computer.lol. I know who'll win.lol.

Thanks again for the the help and will let you know how it works out.

LOU

I would try replacing the video card. Chances are the adapter is on the motherboard, but you should be able to plug in a third-party video card to take its place. Because the prices of video cards drop rapidly, you can buy a card that was introduced a year or two ago for fifty bucks, yet it will be much more powerful than what you have in your four year old computer.

Cleaning out all the dust is a good idea. Video adapters generate a lot of heat. Be sure and clean out the CPU and GPU (Graphics Processing Unite) heat sinks. I try to clean out mine once a year.

I made the mistake of buying a new HP yesterday, and am already regretting it. Miss my old Acre that died. This HP just freezes up for no reason.. It may get returned. Now I remember why I swore off HP years ago..

GOOGLE the model # of your 'puter and "capacitor plague".

I have had two Dells so afflicted and fixed them by swapping out a couple of 'lytics on the video card.

I had a wighead wig between the heatsink and the fan.

A big furry ruggyhead mop

I removed it

it quit overheating

Don't cuss HP,

Take it back and exchange it. Don't fight this.

Electronic parts fail and they will usually do it within just a few hours of run in.

Lou,

Save your money. I've been cleaning the silly things for eons with just compressed air and a small nozzle.

Here's a pretty good graphics card I just put in my PC. A couple of years ago a similar adapter would have run a couple hundred bucks. Now it sells for less than fifty. I picked mine up at the local Microcenter store for $40, and at some distant point in the future I'll get a $10 rebate bringing the price down to 30 bucks.
