How to date a Cockshutt 1800

Do you have the serial number? It should be on the tag on the lower dash between the clutch and brake pedals. It's actually an Oliver 1800 with a different paint job. Ignore the - and the last three numbers of the serial number and just use the first five or six numbers. Those last three are the transmission code.

Someone has painted over the plate. There was this number in the cast underneath the plate 107314A. Could this be it or should I try to scratch the paint off of the plate? Thanks!

There are Cockshutt emblems in the cast on the rad cover as well as the sides of the engine cowling. Oliver bought out Cockshutt? Is this why you say it is actually an Oliver? Very interesting! It's a nice old tractor. Seems to run good but the cab needs some windows and a bit of tlc.

I'd try getting some paint off the tag. Make sure you get the serial number though, not the spec number. There should be a casting code number up on the bottom of the rear end housing. That would tell the date the cast was poured, but if it's one of those close to the date they changed over months,it might be borderline between an A,B or C series.
I'm trying to remember how to read that code. I don't remember if it's month/day/and last number of the year,or day/month and last number of the year.
Lay under it and see if you find something like 1244 or 5145 or some such thing. That would mean something like 12th of April 64 or May 14 65 or something like that. Somebody on the Oliver/Cockshutt forum will no doubt remember how to read it.

White Motor Company bought Oliver first, then Cockshutt. From about 63 on yes,the Cockshutts were Olivers painted red or tan. The only difference was the paint, tag, front emblem, steering wheel center and decals. That spear on the side of the hood was a Cockshutt thing though. Prior to the two being merged,Oliver just used a decal but then went to using that Cockshutt spear on both brands.
Interesting enough, prior to 1946 the Cockshutts were rebadged Olivers too,and Hart Parr before that. Oliver bought Hart Parr in 1929. Cockshutt built their own factory and designed their own tractors that came out around 1946 and were built until White merged them together.

Just a thought after I said that,I don't believe there were any A series Cockshutts,so that would narrow it down.

Is the throttle mounted to the steering post or is on the side of the dash. You did not say gas or diesel. The A series will have the spin on oil filter behind the distributor. If it is an A series diesel there will be another spin on filter ahead of the distributor The B & C series will have the oil filter ahead of the distributor. There are 3 casting numbers on the block next to the starter. What are those 3 numbers?

Thanks so much for the info. I will hunt down some paint stripper and uncover that plate. This tractor was red and white/cream before someone painted it green.

Ya,I kind of thought dinner and a movie, but I didn't think that was what he was looking for. LOL

I would get some paint remover. ZipSrip is one I have used. Wear gloves and watch it very carefully or It will etch into the plate. Try it in one small spot in the corner of the plate first.
I am pretty sure all the 1800A tractors had the decals just put on the side panels. The B and C
had the raised steel panels on the side panels.

Several years ago a guy since me a picture of an 1800 A series that he has. He is in western Canada. It has the Cockshutt style hood sides and it is a very late 1800 A series tractor. Otherwise I would agree with you. J.

I had to look at Oldtanker and Randy's post for a few minutes to figure it out. Don't you guys know some of us might have a little dementia?

Up, that's what makes it so much fun!

Rick

If I'm reading the serial number right it is a 1963 B. The B is the series number? Or means diesel? Mines diesel. Where would a good place to buy a manual be? All responses much appreciated!
