I need help locating a rear axle shim kit for a 1951 Ferguson TO20. I also have a question. Do both sides need to be shimmed or just one. The manual suggests its just one but in breaking down the axle I found both sides has shims. The old ones are falling apart and I cannot reuse.

Thanks in advance

You can just shim one side.

Now if you went in there to replace a seal that died of old age, now might be the time to do the other side too, get enough shims to do both sides just in case.

This site carries them-

The purpose of the shims is to keep the axle ends from butting against each other, so it doesn't matter if the shims are placed on one side or both. To be sure the clearance is correct, when the axles are installed and the housing nuts tightened, you should be able to rotate one axle and the other axle will remain stationary. If both axles move, you need more shims. Too much clearance allows the axles to move in and out too much and may create an oil leak.

Steve,

Both sides are leaking so am replacing brakes and seals for both. Just no luck finding shims for a TO20. The ones Bill said do not list they will work for a TO20. I called and was told they don't carry them here.

Thanks for message.

Bill,

Those shims do not list they will work in the TO20. I called and was told they no longer carry them for the Ferguson TO20.

Thanks for message,
Dave
