starter problems

I am having issues with the starter on my 806 LP tractor. I had it rebuilt at a reputable shop and put a new soleniod on it. when I hit the starter button the soleniod does not engage the ring gear, the starter just spins. I took the starter off and took it back to the shop, they checked it out and said it works fine. I have a new battery on the tractor. I have to hit the starter button several times before the starter engages. I took off the cover plate, on the bell housing and inspected the ring gear, no noticable wear. I have also by-passed the starter button and the starter does the same thing. Any suggestions

Sounds like a bad starter drive gear. There is a one way clutch inside the gear, if it slips the starter will just spin and not turn the flywheel.

Could be they didn't replace the drive, or installed a rebuilt one (those have a bad reputation), or it's just defective.

A new drive, or a healthy used one, will lock when hand turned opposite the starter rotation, and be difficult but possible to turn the same rotation as the starter. If it turns easy, it's worn out.

How about the starter push button? They fail when they get old....Contacts get burnt/ corroded.Ground also is suspect.look at the ring gear teeth.,you will see if they are chewed off.

Agree.

Had the same problem with a new starter drive gear.

Installed a different "style" drive gear and now it works fine.

One other thing you check is take a soapstone and mark the flywheel and ring gear. then try to start it, if it just spins, then look for your marks and see if there still lined up. On very rare occasions the ring gear will spin on the flywheel and can be a bear to figure out that's what's happening. jstpa

This is most likely the reason though there is another possibility. If the lever is not correctly located on the drive it will not move the gear far enough the engage the ring gear.

Is the drive for a reversed rotation engine. Another words if you have a clockwise rotation engine, with a counter clockwise drive, it will just spin with the gear in the flywheel. It is not all that common but does happen.
