Haying, waiting for it to rain

Finally put up a load today that I am comfortable to stack in the barn. Has been real problematic putting up safe hay this season. One field took over a week to get dry - by the time it was moldy and discolored. Am feeding right off the wagon. Animals aren't impressed! Second load of nasty hay this year. I don't need rain to get hay "up" to moisture!

Well.....

Certainly not this year!

But, you don't want alfalfa too dry, the leaves fall off and you leave the best part in the field, just bale stems.

Grass hay also will shatter if too dry, less noticeable but about as big a problem.

People in the SW can likely reply to this, they go out and bale at 2:00am when a little dew falls. That sounds just nuts to this upper Midwest guy who struggles with high humidity and rain every 3 days to try to make a few dry bales.......

Started rake at 0530, baler about 15 min. later, made it 'til 1000 before it was too dry. Best day this week !!
