How can this happen?
Grain Bin Accident

So Tragic ! I also lost a good friend in a Bin a few months ago.

Sad... I also lost a friend a few years ago. He hauled corn, was knocking frozen corn lose through the top hole and fell in.

very sad, prayers for the family.

Who in their right mind would send a 9 year old kid in to a situation like this? I know farm kids grow up early and are expected to pull their weight but something is wrong here.

Local guy sent his kid into the tank of a grinder mixer to help fix something from the inside. He went to do something and when he came back he fired up the grinder mixer. The kid was right where he left him...

By nature, a grain bin is considered a confined space and as such would fall under OSHA regulations in any other line of work. Thing is no one wants OSHA breathing down the necks of those of us that are self employed, and telling us what to and not to do as we can take care of ourselves just fine...and if we kill ourselves it's not anyone elses fault. Because of this freedom from governmental intrusion into small, family farms, small business, etc, etc, idiots, like the parent that put their kid in the grain bin with no safety harness here, are allowed to continue being idiots and call the whole thing a "farm accident". Personally I think OSHA involvement or not, the parent involved here should be prosecuted for child endangerment, manslaughter, or whatever you want to call it, for being such an idiot. Yes, their kid is dead, and I know they feel bad about it, and I feel for them in one respect, but in another I have no sympathy for the fact they were stupid and allowed their negligence kill their kid. This incident is not much different than the guy on the news here lately that left his young son to die in a HOT care while he was doing other things.

That said, I understand the whole idea of a family farm, and like many others on here was around all kinds of heavy equipment helping my Dad (working on tractors, not farming) as I was growing up. Thing is my Dad never purposefully put me in a hazardous situation like was done here. In this case I would have seen no problem with the kid helping out, but even an adult in a bin with that much material in it, should have had on a safety harness to prevent something like this from happening to them. I've been in silos containing ground up plastic that had clogged or bridged over. Quite a few times, had I not had on that harness I could have easily been smothered by the material when I fell and sunk, or had a bridged over part collapse. To think a child would be in any less danger than an adult is plain out stupid and negligent. To put anyone, adult or child in a situation like this without proper safety gear us both stupid and negligent. As such, in this case, I think both the stupid, and the negligence both need to be punished.

My thoughts and prayers to the family. Such a tragic accident.

Just wondering if it was an Amish family? Most farm accidents in these parts involving children are Amish.
They just chalk it up to God"s will,without evaluating their input into the situation.

Not too difficult to guess how it went down. They had been emptying the bin, so the grain was loose and there was probably a funnel-shaped depression in the bin. It's even possible the grain was bridged inside the bin, leaving a cavity. They send the boy inside for whatever reason, he stands on the loose grain and goes sliding to the bottom. Grain slides down after him and buries him.
