He said about 3 hours north of chicago. I asked then I needed to know how he was traveling and how fast. He got a little taken aback. I though my request was reasonable.

Three hours is probably more descriptive than nnn miles.

Well I am about 4 hours from Chicago, but I am right next to the Mississippi river.

Common for us Wisconsinites to describe distance in hours. The assumption is that you're traveling by car/truck and going the speed limit (or at least close). You have to allow for speed zones, traffic, etc. For example, I'm 88 miles from my in-laws, but it's a two-hour trip.

That has been a sore spot with me, when they calculate distances by hours.
Yust think if the Army was going to take out a spot the general would use feet, yards, miles, he wouldn't say,the target is 45 minutes away or some other ridicules time measurement for distance.
When people ask how long it will take to get to a destination I tell them depends on how they are traveling, whether walking, riding a mule, going by river boat, train, or plane.

Tom, I'm aboot 4 hours from Chicago also. But I live close to the Ohio river.
That is if I was in an airplane, and allowing time for baggage inspection etc.
