Farmall 506 Diesel

Been looking for a little bigger tractor to help out with my hay operation, I put up afew thousand small square bales a year and have done very well with my old Farmall M and Farmall H duo I've been running. Well times are changing and I have the chance to pick up afew more acres to bale each year so I'm looking at options for cheap power. I'm not going to run out and drop 30 grand on a "hobby farm" tractor so I've been keeping my eyes peeled for something alittle larger than my M with a diesel engine. I finally stumbled upon a Farmall 506 with new rubber on the back and very nice on the front, comes with a 5 way blade, 6' Bush hog, and a bale spear listed for $3500. What are some areas to look at when I go give it a spin this weekend? Are they decent machines over all? I'm looking into eventually buying a disc mower, will a 506 handle one? I mostly cut prairie hay with afew fields of broam and clover.

I mean Farmall 560. Sorry bout that guys

I have a friend who is financially able to buy any tractor he wants for his hay operation and has newer, bigger tractors sitting in the shed but when he bought a tractor exclusively for haying, he went out and bought a 560 diesel. His has a turbo on it but he does not need the extra power. I had a 560 gasser years ago. Good tractor.

They are extremely popular with the tractor pullers. I have read plenty about how not long after they came out that they got recalled or something to that effect because the rear ends weren't up to the tillage work that a lot of owners were using them for. Haying would be light work for it though.

Way back when I had a couple of them. They were good tractors. That price may not be far off with the equipment as listed. Check to see how it starts. The old things always need glow plugs to start.

I liked the 460 I grew up on, as a teenager, plowing, disking, brush hogging.

One comment: It probably has a 2 point hitch.
Most of the disc mowers are probably 3 point hitch, so you would have to figure out how to handle that.
