I know the smoke alarms work.

I had the outside door open to the garage while cooking hamburgers tonight, the wind blew the smoke in and set off the smoke alarm.

At least I know it works.
 
SWMBO tests them every couple of nights. I think she has learned that I come to supper because when the smoke alarm goes off, dinner is cooked....

Same here, smoke alarm means food soon to me.
 
Ours went off one evening recently. We were cooking supper, not a lot of visible smoke, but the alarm sensed it about twenty feet away. Like you said, it's good to know they work.
 
the ionization detectors are very sensitive--its best to put a photo cell (smoke) detector near kitchens and showers.
I have a heat type detector near my wood stoves.

Ours went off while taking a nap 2 years ago. Cost $90,000 to repair.Crock Pot on the stove shorted out.
