A Lady Driver hits a mattress

She ran over something in the road and her car was making a loud noise. They probably had to get
out the cutting torch. Hal

I did that once driving through some rough stuff in the middle of no where. Took 2 hours with a small side cutters and vice grip to cut through that spring steel mess. When I got done my hands looked like I had tried to catch a couple bobcats barehanded.

I wrapped up the driveshaft on the truck once with green sweet clover stalks. It took me an hour to cut all those stalks off the drive shaft with my pocket knife.

Old neighbor growing up was getting to be a pretty bad driver. He had just went and paid cash for a new 1/2 ton Dodge after he totaled the last one. His kids weren't happy because they wanted to get his license pulled. Anyways, he pulled strings on round bales and would throw them in a pile in the pasture. Now this was a pretty dang big pile. He wasn't paying attention and backed into the pile. Well in the process of trying to get unstuck, he managed to get twine wrapped around the entire drive shaft from transmission to rear axle.
The truck wouldn't go real fast and was laboring he said, so he put it in 1st and drove the 35 miles home from the pasture. Parked it in the garage.
Called the dealership and told them to come get it because the new truck had no power like his old one!!

Try flax straw. It is flexible and very strong and will wrap like nothing you have ever seen. Gets stronger in the process. We had a wrap on the driveshaft of the IH grain truck one harvest. It kept picking up more and more til the ball of rotating straw pulled one of the hydraulic hoses off the truck hoist. Could have been worse if one of the combine drivers had not noticed it. Last harvest I had it wrap on the front driveshaft of my Magnum tractor. Even at 3 mph the straw was getting hot enough to turn black from heat against the driveshaft. It took a saw and plenty of time to clear the straw wrap every time.

the differential on my wife's car started making noise. a close inspection revealed what looked to be a full spool of monofiliment fishing line wrapped around the universal, cutting into the bearing seal. low grease in the differential.

try that southern vine; kudzu. wrapped around a jeep cj5 drive shaft till it stalled. finally was able to get to a point where I could lay down under it to cut it off.

Years ago someone thru and old box spring mattress in one of our havyfields. Must have burned it because the alfalfa grew right thru it.
I was cutting hay with a NH 479 haybine and hit it. It took 3 hours to get it out, replace knives, and straighten out reel tubes and bats.

I remember my dad catching a "hunter" in a field. The guy drove over an electric fence without lowering it and wrapped 50 yards of 17 guage wire very tightly around his drive shaft. First time I ever saw my dad literally kick a another man's arse (several times). Quite entertaining for an 7 year old that had up to that time only heard such stories.

Cattle were wondering all over place and if the guy had hacked the wire off he would have driven off not telling anyone what he'd done and warned anyone about cattle being on the road.

James frequently has vines wrap around the drive on the bush hog. Keeps a small axe sharp to hack it off. Makes a real mess.

I saw something similar to this in the shop years ago, it was barbed wire fence though. I bet there was a couple hundred feet wrapped in the driveshaft, it beat up the muffler and fuel tank bad enough to put holes in them (plastic fuel tank). I'm not sure they would have stopped had it not been for all the fuel leaking out. It's a wonder a spark didn't ignite the leaking fuel.

I ran across an old fence line laying on the ground when cleaning up some regrowth along a hay field with my mulcher.
Took all of 10 seconds to wrap up but 4 hrs to cut it off.

One of the fields I hayed in 1980 was the staging area for the Army helicopters flying to and from the Mt. St. Helens eruption that spring. I managed to find a discarded parachute with my disc mower on the back side. Now that's some tough material! I was hacking away with my dull pocket knife, and an old gentleman came out from a nearby house. He sized up the situation, then said "Why don't I loan you my pocket knife, and I'll go sharpen yours?" Great idea- his worked much better. When he brought mine back, I thanked him profusely- He said "No, thank YOU for giving an old man something useful to do today."

Never did even know his name, but that man could sure sharpen a knife!

WOW that mulcher looks like a really bad sy-fi movie monster or something! The worst I had was with a New Holland haybine when it would wrap canary grass around the rollers. Can you say steel cable? Had a big pocket knife, screw driver. pry bar, hatchet, hacksaw blade, and a few other tools in the tool box on the 300 utility.

My worst one was hitting a half full BOX of baling wire that was in some tall grass I was bush hogging down...flat killed the tractor in about 3 seconds took all evening and part of the next morning to cut it all out...

Did that with a big roll of rusty chicken wire.

Going home, dark, saw it about the time I hit it, wasn't sure what it was, thought it was a dead horse! I braced for the impact... Nothing! Started to wonder if I was hallucinating!

Didn't really wrap, mostly wedged between the drive shaft and the floor. Drove on home, just a 1/2 mile or so. I was under there taking the drive shaft out, here come the truck it fell off of, he had a bunch of it stacked on, no tie downs.

He started asking questions about "Where I found that wire". Then started getting mad because it was all wadded up...

Needless to say, I wasn't really in the mood to hear that. Asked him to take it and leave or I would call the sheriffs dept. He left.

(quoted from post at 11:23:14 06/11/14) Bison,

That had to be a bummer!!
Great pics though.
No kidding  ,..it happened 10 min after i got out there and i had to beetle it 2 ml back to the shop.

State went to triple flail mowers on their tractors mowing 2 lane high ways and the drivers started doing a more extensive job.Where fences were down-bad,they started mowing the fence line and out 10-15 feet into the fields(if no crop there).I would like to see the inside or whatever of those mowers after mowing miles of wire fencing-steel post-wood posts-trees.Been doing it 5 yrs.or so and doing more every yr.

Last year I rented a Bobcat with a mulcher on it. Found an abandoned fence line and the result looked just like yours. Took bolt cutters, fence tool, needle nose pliers, a hammer and lots of time to get the wire off.
In between wire the mulcher worked great. Wish I owned one.
