2440 making oil??????

Looking for some help here guys. I have a JD 2440 that seems to be making oil. When I changed to oil it was about a quart high and smelled of diesel.

I know one of the first places to look is the injection pump (stanodyne) but I had it rebuild less than a hundred hours ago. Should I be looking at the fuel pump or others places? The tractor runs and starts fine and almost no smoke. How can I isolate the problem rather than throwing parts at it? THANKS for your help!

My bet would be the injection pump. Being recently rebuilt has nothing to do with it. It's a matter of flipping or cutting one of the umbrella shaft-seals when putting the pump back on. VERY easy to do - even when an experienced Deere mechanic does the job.

Sorry to tell you that your new pump is the culprit.Shaft seal has failed. It may have been damaged during installation.

Depends on when the problem started. The fact that
the pump was recently changed is a BIG reason to
suspect the shaft-seals. Otherwise - it would be a
crap-shoot.

I agree but checking transfer pump is way less time consuming than checking cup seals on an inj pump.

I have had the same problem in the past on a 2040. Check/change transfer pump. It worked for me, that was 10 years ago and no problems since.
