A guy near me has a Ford sitting out by the road with a For Sale sign on it, so I stopped and looked. At first I assumed it was an NAA, but he's calling it a 600. The color is a very weathered red (it looks rusty, but it's not rust.) I raised the hood and underneath is still its original red, because a decal of some sort is still intact.

I'm kinda interested in this tractor, but I'm not familiar with it. It appears to be in good basic condition on quick inspection; it appears to have spent a lot of time out in the elements, but not really used that much. Not farmerized. Most of the checkering on the clutch pedal is still visible. Tin is pretty good, rims are good, tires (12.5 x 28 I think) are poor. He's asking $2850, which includes a rotary cutter I don't need.

Anyone give me some insight into this tractor? I'll try to post a photo if I get more serious about it. I have not actually talked to the owner yet.

If the tin is red, (and the paint is original or correct - big ifs!) it would be a 601 series. 600 series still had grey tin. To find out what it really is, find the model and serial number stamped on the flat just above and to the rear of the starter. Model number is three digits, sometimes with a letter at the end. Examples: 641, 651, 661, 641S, 671.

That sounds a little high for poor paint and tires. Check the engine internally with a vacuum gauge and a compression tester, and put a little load on the three point to see weather or not it holds it up for ten minutes.

until you find the model number, quick checks
NAA has the big axle nut like a 8N, 600-601 axle ends will be smooth.
NAA has external hydraulic lines, 600-601 has a manifold.

If original, 600 fenders look sorta like 8N fenders but are shaped different at the bottom.
601 have the newer completely different style fenders

Not so fast there, not all 601 series have live PTO. Only a model 661 will have live PTO. OP will have to check the flat just above and behind the starter for the model. The serial number will also be stamped there as well. Most common model of 601 series is the 641 which will have a 4 speed trans.

I have a Jubilee. The older I get the more I wish my IH C and Jubilee had powersteering, Live pto, external hyd. Also wished the Jubilee had a ride like the IH C. Wish my IH C had 3 pt. Can't have everything with the old tractors.

Shop around, for that money, I've seen nice looking rebuilt tractors. Some are going to jump on me for saying that I will never buy a ford with SOS. Dad had too many problems with his.
