Grinding milo

I grind my own feed for hogs. I usually use base mix, a bale of alfalfa, and the balance in corn. I planted 40 acres of milo this year with the intention of putting a portion of the grain as corn and a portion as milo. I will figure ratios later.

We ground milo growing up and used the same screen as everything else. I don't want to make it dust, though. Anyone use milo as ground feed? Should I run it through without the screen in it throttled down? I use a JD 400 grinder.
 
I feed milo for 28 years to hogs. Milo can replace corn pound for pound. You must grind milo or it will go through the hogs and you will lose feed value.

If you mix with corn thats fine but i would be more concerned about not getting it ground enough than concerned about turning it into powder.

I dont know anything about a JD400 grinder/mixer. I used a small screen for my milo. It may have been a 3/8 or 1/4 screen.

I suggest if you have a small screen you grind a small amount of milo and see if your grinding all of it or just cracking it.

If you try to run it through the grinder without a screen it will leave way to much whole grain, maybe 70% or more.

Even cracked milo will go through a hog so personally I would grind it fine and then add the corn even if you have to change screens.

Feed is too expensive to waste these days.

When we were hauling it off the field. To a feed yard 20 years ago, they popped it like popcorn to feed. Don't know if that would be practical at this time or not.
 
I am sure we had a smaller screen. One just for Milo.. If we did it is still up at the farm in the grinder. We had one just like yours.

But above all, wear the best resperator you can buy. I coughed for years after messing around in bins of milo. I think it permantly damaged my lungs, and may have given me the strepp infection with damaged my kidneys and resulted in total kidney failure, and a kidney transplant in 1991.

I hate the stuff.
