Thanks for posting that"s one BEAUTIFUL old truck camper. My very FIRST camper (around 1970) was a home made plywood topper I placed on the back of my 1966 Ford F 250 4X4 and drove it to Florida. Then I upgraded and got an 11 ft slide in truck camper on an old red Ford truck similar to the one in your post. Later I mounted that same camper on the back of a 1954 Ford F5 (think it was??) truck and headed to Wyoming and Montana Deere and Antelope hunting. The night before (got done at 2 AM) I pulled the hogs head and changed the ring and pinion gear and set it purely by hand and feel having never done one and headed to Wyoming at 5 AM AND THE DIFFERENTIAL WORKED FINE YAYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

That's a real classic- I've seen them with the curved windows, but none that elaborate. Not many left, because after a few years outside most started leaking terribly, and in a few years, were shot. Would love to see the inside of that one.

We've had pickup campers pretty much continuously since 1972, because wife needs to tow a horse trailer most of the time.

We had a Del-Rey like that from 1966 to 1978 and covered all of Canada-USA and in Alaska twice. They had a lifetime construction warranty.

Glad you posted it! I hear those old campers are the in thing at the rat rod car shows. I hope so I'm going to restore a 1955 IH 1/2 ton shot box that has an old sportsman camper on it. No where as neat a the one in the picture, Thanks!!

want to see it again go to greenfield village in dearborn michigan on fathers day weekend. thats the place this was shot at. great show! i go every year.

I remember seeing campers like that long ago. I always like the idea of a slide in. You could tow your boat behind it. You used to see those rigs in Field and Stream, Outdoor Life, Sports Afield, FFG, Popular Mechanics, etc. back in the 60's and 70's. I was going to be a hunting and fishing expert and have one of those rigs back when I was a kid. You remember the guys back then- Joe Brooks, Ted Trueblood, AJ McLane, Homer Circle, Pete Brown, John Jobson, etc. Fedora hat, safari jacket and the straight stemmed pipe. It was all fantasy, but it was sure cool to a kid int he sticks like me.

nice
parents had a similarly massive Swinger truck camper back in the 60's on a F250.
Riding in the forward bed over the cab (2 more bunks over that one....massive)
watching the miles go by out the front window...
Probably illegal today....maybe then too...LOL

i saw that truck about 2 years ago at the car show at "the Ford" aka greenfield village in dearborn, mi. I suspect that is were the picture was taken even.

I was pretty cool.

noone would ever think of making one like that now days.
