Corn is almost done. Little rain today and a great meal out with the little honey. Now time to just sit and watch the Gold Finches as I search for equipment on line. Hope you all have a had a great day. Over 20 of them out here right now.

Found one in the grass one day. Acted stunned, like it was hit by a car or flew in to a window. After about 10 minutes I set it down and as soon as I did it flew away.

Gold finch is also the New Jersey state bird. I have not seen any yet. Lot s of red wings and robins.

Yep the one on the left looks like it hasn"t gotten all its bright feathers yet.

Maybe it was eating some of the fermented berries; I've watched other birds do that. They'd get drunk and fly into the big living room window. They would lay on the ground for awhile and then fly away.

Yes their color change is drastic from summer to winter and back.Take a look in a good bird book for summer/winter pictures.

The Golden Finch is not the state bird of Tennessee, but we have a bunch of them around here.

I have a big bird feeder for the other birds and a small finch feeder for the goldens. They are a beautiful delight to us every day.

Only the males get bright yellow in summer. The females and winter males are a duller gray/green color.

Gold finches nest in my woods at the back of my farm. One day I was on a ladder picking cherries when about 15 of them were flying toward the tree and when they saw me, they all flew into the cedar tree next to the cherry tree. They waited till I was done then picked their own cherries. Finches and mockingbirds will clean the tree in one afternoon. Robins and starlings clean up the ground.

Plant some sunflowers. When the flowers are mature, the goldfinchs will appear out of nowhere and hang upside down to eat the seeds. When the seeds are gone....so are the goldfinchs.

I hadn"t seen any goldfinches for a long time, but last week I saw at least 2 of them flying around above my property SE of Spokane.

Yes, the goldfinch is the Washington state bird.

It was nice to see them again. I wish I would see bluebirds and hear meadow larks again, but I have not in at least 10 years. Miss them.

GVSII, sms, and ss55, thanks for the info. We have a few gold finch around here in central NC. There is a spot way back in my back yard where some thistle sprouted, I generally leave a few to bloom and go to seed for the birds, need to plant some sunflowers when I get time.
