Learned something, or I think I did

The charging system on my grandfathers '42 Farmall H just hasn't been quite right ever since I got it 3 years ago. It is still the original 6V positive ground system. I replaced the VR several times, had the generator rebuilt twice, and rewired the entire tractor as the original wiring had been spliced several places. I even took the whole tractor on my trailer to our local auto electric shop and tested everything under operating conditions. The battery always stayed charged, and it started right up after sitting all winter, but the ammeter was never steady, and seemed to bounce around a lot. Occasionally it would be steady for a time, but then start bouncing around. I finally decided the only thing I hadn't changed or rebuilt was the battery. Removed the battery, substituted one from my Dad's '48 Allis Chalmers B, and the ammeter is as steady as a rock. Put the Farmall battery in the Allis, started her up and the ammeter is bouncing around. I'm thinking I have an intermittent short between plates or an intermittent bad internal connection. Anybody else ever run into this?

Not exactly that Paul, but I have had a battery cause the genny
to either charge full tilt or not at all. When and if it wanted.
