1070 Case - Problems changing hydraulic filters

Greetings -

bought a case 1070 1 year ago - nice tractor - use it for baling and loader work during the winter. We went to change the hydraulic filters, but can't get the cast iron plates off the bottom of the filter housings. I can turn them about 1/4 of a turn and then the bolt stops. Don't want to bust the housing, so I'm just wondering if I am missing something. I realize they are spring loaded, but just can't figure this one out. Any help would be appreciated.

They can be a real hassel to spin the bottom cap off. The spring is not an issue as it is light and only holds the cold oil relief cartrage and filter tight to the top of the housing.
You said you could turn the cap about a quarter turn, so you have got it broke loose. We on ocasion had to apply heat to the threaded area at the bottom to even get them to unscrew.
Just apply some JB or Khrol and work the cap back and forth. There is nothing inside that you will damage.
Just be sure that you pick the cold oil relief cartridges and spring out of the drain bucket, as without them you have no filtration, and replacement from CNH are an astounding $400 plus each.

DO NOT under any circumstances tap the sides of the housing with a hammer, they will crack.

An impact gun works well for pulling them, as does a wrench being struck with a hammer. Just DO NOT hit the housing.
