From the top,

The fastest steam train in the world and one of
the last steam engines used on British Rail..

Coronation Scot. Running on the main line around
the middle 1950's.

A reproduction of The Rocket, pulled the first
passenger train in England and also killed the
first railway casualty on its first run.

favorite Prime Minister, Gladstone.

The last photograph is of the 0-4-2 Gladstone express locomotive designed by Stroudley for the London Brighton South Coast Railway (LBSC) in the 1880s. That may be Queen Victoria's coach in the background.

Hi Majorman, in the early 1950s I lived near the east coast mane line and was into train spotting. We got to see Mallard coming through very often. About 10 years ago I got to see the site were she broke the world speed record for a steam powerd locomotive. Shall I see you at the Stradsett Rally in May? MJ

I am unfamiliar with British Railroad car coupling I see a large hook at the front along with a rather flimsy looking set of loops with some adjustment to them. Is that set of loops what they used to connect the cars to the engine or do the cars have a more substantial hook on them?

Wow that is something, it just looks so flimsy compared to what we see on the trains here in the US. It also explains the bumpers on each of the engines and carriages.

As far as I know those bumpers are still used on all the European trains.
