briggs vanguard valve adjustment

Anyone on here routinly work on these?
Do these normally get too loose or too tight from wear when you adjust them. I have heard intervals frm 250 hrs to 500 hrs.

mike m,

While I haven't worked on many Vanguard engines, I have worked on a lot of Briggs OHV engines of various horsepower . In my personal experience as a small engine mechanic ( home schooled ) the valves get looser from wear and tear and wear on valve guides and cam lobes . If you adjust them to tight then the engine may not run and if it does then it will put more wear on the valve system from being too tight and cause them to wear out faster . This applies to any OHV engine regardless of horse power, number of cylinders, make or model .

I have found at least one exception to the rule.
Honda CRV engines at least the 1999 & 2000 years.
These have solid lifters on an overhead cam and in time the valves will actually tighten up from valve wear recession into the head and then burn a valve. Honda won't even recognize the problem and tell you to have them adjusted more often.

I have not messed with many of the OHV small engines to know how they behave. I have adjusted the valves on some small diesels and they are as you described loose from wear. Seemed like the first time (500hrs) you find adjustment needed but then on they seemed ok.

Briggs single cyl overhead valve engines have a compression release, its built into the camshaft. It keeps the intake valve from closing all the way till the piston is close to tdc. When the clearance on the intake valve gets too wide, you will notice, especially on ridding mowers, it acts like the battery is weak, and won't turn over. If you pull the valve cover and adjust the intake valve back to 8 thousands, it turns over and runs like new again.
