Starter problem

I have a 93 Chevy G20 van and this afternoon I went to start it and the starter never disengaged. I quickly turned the key off and the starter kept going. By the time I found a wrench to disconnect the battery it drug down and quit. I let the starter cool for about a half an hour and re-connected the battery and turned the key and it did it again. The other guys there said the bendix stuck. I think it was the ignition switch. What does everybody else think?

I'd guess it's the relay sticking.

If it's accessible, usually a light smack with a wrench or something will free it up.

They can fail with old age - but excessive current can make them stick like that. Check all your battery/starter cables and connections, including ground.

Most likely the starter relay. Had this problem with a Ford wagon back in 1985. Relay welds itself in the closed position.

If you can access the small terminal on the starter solenoid, or the wire going down to the starter (used to be purple, not sure about 93) with a test light or volt meter, try to start it again and see if that wire remains hot with the ignition off or "not in start" position.

If it stays hot, it's not the starter.

Could be another relay involved, or the ignition switch.
