An Amish friend is building a barn. He used 2 1/4"
thick "2x10's", for joists, and 2 1/4" thick
"2x8's" as flooring - all Oak. Gonna be nice when
it's done.

Is black poplar strong? Or just the fact that its plentiful? Around me, poplar, or popple is cheap weak wood that rots in a hurry.

eep it wet and it never rots

I don"t know what kind of barn floor but with use
oak floor will polish and be quite slippery. Around
here most used hemlock with the grain around the
knots it stays rough and animals don"t slip as much.

So this post has me wonderin, how long do wood floors last and how are they laid down? Over wood stringers suspended on wall's or right on the ground? I am build a machinery storage building and want a floor, to control moisture wick-in up from the ground. Any suggestion no how do it ??

All you need to do is make certain that there will be good ventilation under it.

A wood barn floor lasts a surprisingly long time. Most times the wood wears thin and the nails rust out but the floor doesn't rot. The manure must have a preserving affect. Wood is warmer and drier than cement. Downfall is it is not a sanitary floor by any means. Cement is easier to clean with a shovel and pitchfork. I've torn up old wood hog house flooring and reused it in other places. It takes on a dark color and is full of rusted nails but it's usually in good shape aside from being worn. Jim
