ford ranger power steering pump

I am replacing the water pump on a 2003 Ford Ranger. Happened to notice there is between an 1/8 to 1/4 inch of endplay in the power steering pump. Does not leak and works good. Thinking about replacing it. Any advise?

After you waste your money to purchase a replacement pump, you may be surprised to find that it may have even more play than the old one......
The shaft is designed to "float" to prevent any misalignment of the mounting brackets or belt from putting pressure on the pump rotor that would cause excessive or premature internal wear.
