Question about a I.H or Farmall 400

I would like to ask about the I.H or farmall 400 tractor. They where made around 1958 I think they where a 6 volt battery system? (Right or wrong. I have this person who has one of these tractors and the wires are geting hot when he is runing it.The tractor has the Dist. system on it plus a restister like the book shows next to the coil. It has a 12 volt battery and a Altenator Delco Remdy. Could it have been converted over to 12 voltsand they had screwed up or is the 12 volts stock on that tractor when it was made new.

If the original charge wires are used fron the new alternator to the battery charge system they are probably not adequately sized for the alternator output. I would recommend a #10 wire in the main charge circuit.

Thank you for telling me that. I was about ready to tell him that we need to redo some of his wires. This tractor looks like somebody just change who knows what and did not make an effort to do a good job. Just needed to know what every body can tell me before I tell him. Thanks Brent

The Farmall 400 is earlier, (row crop with or without wide front)the following are serial number/year breaks ,1954 501
1955 2588
1956 29065. It was the immediate follow on from the SMTA. W400 (wheatland) is similar but lower wide front, smaller rear tires.
Original were all 6v positive ground with a generator. 6 volt coil with no resistor.
The link will take you to real info for wiring the alternator and entire tractor. Jim

Very important: Also check the contact point of the ground wires. Remove the connections and make sure the contact points are clean and making metal-to-metal contact.
