Speaking of maple syrup.......

We gathered another 800 gallons of sap yesterday. Some of it was yellow, some of it looked pretty clear yet. That puts us about 400 gallons over last year, but we had more trees tapped, too. The trees out in the open are done, but we have one loop in the lower woods that is cooler and those trees are dripping today. Looks like we still might eke out another gathering yet in a day or so. Syrup is dark of course, but it doesn't taste buddy yet and the buyers are saying they need dark syrup this year, so we may as well gather if there is enough to make it worth the fuel. The guy who boils our syrup has some low cool woods also and they are still dripping, so we might get one more boiling yet.
Wasn't as good of seaon as last year, but it could have been worse.

Don,
We ripped down 1400 buckets today. Little to no sap in the buckets. the buckets that had sap in them were filled with millers, flies, and spiders, and the sap was either yellow or milky, so we dumped the sap on the ground. The woods is bone dry. Tomarrow we will tare down the last 750 buckets and boil off the evaporators. Then we have to wash all the buckets and evaporator pans, and hope for a better 2015.
The uncles started planting oats yesterday and the dust is flying.
We delayed pulling the buckets last week hopeing the cold weather would induce another run, but there is no moisture in the ground and the 3"of snow we got, did nothing to produce more sap. The trees have No buds on them yet.
It's been a strange and disapointing year, for sure.

We got down to 24 degrees last night and the lower loops in the woods are dripping. The sap is surprisingly clear. I think tomorrow will be our last. There's a time and season for everything. It's time to get on to other things. Like change a broken hub on the 1850 so we can get to spreading the manure pile, hauling gravel for the torn up woods roads, cut fence stakes, get at the garden, cut firewood, finish thinning a stand of red pines, build a chicken coop..................
