Thanks for all the replies. With respect to those who said that the throw out bearing was going I will tell you that this was my impression also. HOWEVER, those folks who asked if it was a CAT 3208 V-8 and said, from experience, that the noise was normal are the guys I think have it right. That is exactly the engine we are talking about and it does sound like a small rock crusher. Still giving this one some thought but might see can I make a deal with the guy.
 
The center plate on the double disc clutch fits loosely on the pins in the fly wheel and it makes a rattling sound. I read your post then went back later to post and someone else had given the diagnosis.

My dad's cousin worked for Caterpillar and claims to have assembled the very first 3208. After the engine went into production he ran the test stand for the 3208 line.
