Please help with pto drive gear

I have a 504 rowcrop and the pto main drive gear at the front of the tranny keeps coming loose. It doesn"t fit tight and has some sort of a wedge or cone shaped washer that is presses into the gear as you tighten the bolt. How do I keep the bolt tight. I put locktight on the bolt the last time I tightened it and it lasted two seasons of haying but now sounds like it is loose again. PLEASE give some advise.

Replace the existing nut with a lock nut. I had that problem on the yoke of my hydraulic lift cylinder on my Wards garden tractor. Locktite keeps it from getting loose. They make different strengths of locktite. Hal

I would GUESS it"s working loose, even with Loctite, because the gear and/or splines are worn and there"s movement between the shaft and gear, even when the retaining bolt is tight.

That being said, did you use a Grade 8 bolt, and high-strength Loctite, with primer?

NOT quite sure how it all fits together, but could the locking wedge/gear/shaft combination be worn in such a way that parts bottom out against each other before the wedge is pulled into place and collapses tightly?

A quick look at the parts breakdowns shows some serial number breaks on the parts, as well.

Normally those with the wedge are tough to get loose. It was the older tractors that just used the large flat washer and cap screw that always c ame loose. I would say all you can do is use the longest grade 8 bolt you can , clean threads with brake cleaner inside and out, use a max setting loc tite , tighten the heck out of it and hope for the best. Only other solution is replace.

I have taken the heavy washer and machined a recess in it to clear the shaft so that it can push the wedge farther back on the shaft. Sometimes that works, sometimes not.
