Yesterday on my drive home, I saw someone was trying to chisel some ground while there was some frost from the drop in temps. They had a nearly new MFWD Massey w/ duals on it, must have been 250+ HP buried to the axels. Then there was a newer MFWD New Holland that was way too small for the kind of pull they needed, buried to the axels befroe it even got to the other one.

I didn't have time for pictures yesterday, and when I went past this evening they had them out. Must've got there at the crack of dawn when it was frozen a little more to get them out.

So what you are saying is that they needed to hurry up and wait huh?? ;)

I know a coulpe of guys like that, RUSH RUSH RUSH be the first on in and get it done, even if it means costing more money/man hours/effort they will still be "ahead of the game"...

Oh well, to each his own! Bryce

I'll admit I had the same thought. I just talked myself out of it before convincing myself it was a good idea. Lots of guys here got froze out of fall plowing, including us. I was plowing just fine with maybe 1" of frost in the ground at noon, and by 10 PM it was too deep to get the plow in the ground. Was pulling up chunks of frozen soil 4-5" thick, and broke 1 or 2 cover boards in the process...

Not sure how I'm gonna work it this spring. Probably just go out with the old Glencoe that's got the points on it and just tear it up, instead of trying to plow it now.

Heavy clay? Here"s something that works here when Fall plowing didn"t get done. Put 16 inch sweeps on the chisel plow, so it undercuts everything (12 inch spacing) but doesn"t turn a whole lot of soil up, like moldboard plowing, so it doesn"t brick up if wet.

Last fall it didn't matter what you were pulling. After that day you were done. That went for the moldboard plow and chisel plow. Couldn't get any penetration at all.

Clay is the main soil here. It takes 100 hp to pull 4 16's.

Nice to hear we aren't the only ones with "real" ground.

Glad to see your 100hp 4-16" comment. We are heavy clay here to in my part of Mid-Michigan. Some of the small guys dont understand what it can take to plow or chisel clay at depth.

All the old guys around me joke that it was named Clayton Township for a reason.

I am usually done planting my spring trees by this time of the year, but havent ventured in the field yet. Don't feel like getting buried in the muddy clay.

I will also chime in on the heavy soil. In my part
of PA it takes 85+ hp for 4-16s and a 5 shank disc
chisel will give a 2-105 White all it wants in some
fields.
