OT 1989 Dodge Ram

My old 89 Ram 308 has died. It was running rough when I went to the dump. When leaving it wouldn,t start. Tryed pouring gas in carb and it would run until the gas was used up . but would not continue to run.

Any ideas on a fix, I know I need a new truck but Ford and Chev have made them so tall I can,t climb into the cab easily.

Sounds like fuel delivery problem. Change fuel filter if not done recently, check fuel pump operation. If fuel pump is in tank, can you hear it spin up when you turn ignition on before engaging starter? If both filter and pump pass test, check fuel pressure regulator. I'm not familiar w/this particular vehicle, but I have an '89 Chev and this would be the steps I would take. If you can't hear pump spin up, rap on bottom of tank briskly and switch ign on again and see if you get a sound. That would be good indication pump is failing.

There's a short chunk of fuel line from the fuel pump the connects to steel fuel line going to the carb. About two or three inches long. Gets hot, dries out and will suck air. Causing your problems. Simple and cheap fix !!! I had the same problems with a 74 dodge and a 318 in the middle of nowhere at midnight. Luckily I had a chunk the same ID in the glove box and a pair of junk pliers. Ten minutes later I was driving down the road.

I'm guessing fuel pump in tank, after it sits for a while turn the key on and listen for it to run, if you can't here it you probably need one,...If you do need to change it take the front 4 bolts out of the bed that hook to the frame then loosen the back 2 and put a jack under the front of the bed and lift it up,..just like a dump bed.....BTDT

No need to remove the body to change fuel pump, several years ago , I cut about a 20 inch hole in the bed floor and put a lead over the hole. Now pump change is a 20 minute job. Thanks
