John Deere X485 or X495

Hi group,

I am looking for a good used lawn tractor for my Hobby farm/Hunting Land. I have found many JD lawn tractors available and the x485/X495 look like the size unit that would work for me. the tractor will be used for mowing the lawn but also keeping my trails cut through my NWSG (after Initially Brush hogging the NWSG) and I plan to add a 3 point hitch and tiller for doing a garden. I will also be tilling a couple small food-plots.

My question is there a benefit to the Diesel X495 and are there any concerns with these two mowers? I'm looking for a unit that is really stought and will last for many years. The units I have been looking at are 2002-2006 units with around 700 hours.

Thanks Much.

I have a JD X595 that I bought new about 10 years ago. It has been a great mower, only issue I have had is one hydraulic hose had to be replaced. I still use it and it still runs and operates like new. It has the 3pt hitch but I have not used it much as I have larger tractors around for that. I have one section of property that is is pretty steep and the four wheel drive is really handy on that as a two wheel drive garden tractor wouldn't be able to pull it and a full size tractor couldn't get under the trees. It also has a low center of gravity which helps when mowing ditches and etc. I really like mine and if something happened to it I would have to get another one.

Good machines but are more for lawns and gardens. Once out on fields and trails a small field tractor is something to consider.
The buy-sells are full of 2-10yr old hydrostatic CUT with taller tires. Somebody is always purchasing a new CUT and moving into their dream rural retreat in their 60's at retirement.
Now a few years later it's no so much fun being isolated from everything. Having to clear snow before going anywhere. All the time to maintain the estate. Failing health and the estate taking more of the retirement fund than expected.
Hence all kinds of low hour , less than 10yr old machines on the market.

The X485 is a real good machine, X495 is the same
with rear steering. I didn t buy the diesel(X585)
because I couldn t justify the extra $1500.00. The
EFI motor is tops, I haven t touched it other than
oil changes since 2005 when I bought it.
